It is, in fact, what every nation does, all the time. We have even had to lock up spies from Israel.
American companies are always reverse engineering other companies products and that's just how it is.
However, China beats us in another way, one that has more dire consequences for us: they graduate more engineers than we do. Many more. And those engineers work for a lot less money than ours do. They are becoming the world's engineers.
Do most Americans even realize China has a space program? We are so self focused and arrogant most Americans don't know what other nations are actually doing. Out of sight and out of mind.
We have already reached the point where many products are designed entirely in China, and Chinese companies approach American companies and European companies with the fully fledged products ready for branding. China is now generating much of the intellectual property we are struggling so hard to protect.
With some exceptions we are quite literally NOT the technology leaders of the world, that ship sailed a long time ago.
The only way we can reverse this trend is to focus more on our educational system, and among some that is an unpopular topic. Instead, education seems to be under attack for partisan reasons. We are heading in the wrong direction.
Also, it is not for nothing that we are also
the only nation in the entire world that ignores the science and pretends climate change is not a serious threat.
We are also the only modern industrialized nation that believes in fantasies about COVID, with magical thinking, and as a consequence have a far outsized share in the world's deaths to it, more than twice the death rate as Canada.
There is a pattern here.
We are stuck on stupid.
