Not sure of the rules to which you are referring? Certainly not the one regarding 3 oz. liquids. I typically take a couple of 12-packs of soda onboard with no issues.

That the one, there were the cans with discarded outside water before we went to the gang plank to board. Maybe there was an alert, the last time I flew it was the day when a terrorist family went wild in Indonesia and we had five separate security screenings in Manila's airport terminal

I've never boarded a cruise ship in Asia so I'm unaware of their protocols. I have boarded in North America, South America and Europe, repeatedly.

In every port there are trash cans with requirements to discard open containers. I think it is mainly to reduce clutter or spillage. You can put the open container in your carry-on without an issue.

In Barcelona, there was a duty-free liquor store right at the gangplank with swarms of people. Just outside, was a table with a sign telling you to leave your "illegal" liquor there. I kept an eye on that table but no one left a deposit for me.
