There are many scenarios where this may happen. For example:

* A collapse of the electrical grid that can not be restored for several years, leaving locales under regional control.
* An advanced foreign AI system may co-opt the economy, then decentralize the country for enhanced control.
* An environmental calamity lasting a decade or more and resulting in widespread starvation may lead to revolt and collapse of the central government.
* Corporations may assume control of the failed national government, then divide up the country for economic control.
* A deadly virus could wipe out most of the population, destroying the economy and leaving the rest as local fiefdoms.

&c. &c.

Haha this is what I notice about Trump supporters. They love federalism as long as they are in control. When they aren't, two countries are a "good idea".

I think an amicable divorce would be healthy for everyone. How do I think it would happen? We could choose sides based on a popular vote - that would be easiest for all but the toss up states - and no, I don't care about people living in a state opposite their preference. That's on them and they are not being held hostage, they can move. If they don't mind it now, that's on them. The toss ups can still choose by popular vote, it would just be more controversial.

How do I think it would happen? I don't think it would be two. There would likely be some Balkanization. I could see the PNW merging with British Columbia - much more in common. I could see the Northeast merging with Ontario. The Midwest would go with the South and go full Gilead, merging schools with church. Florida would likely split, Southern Florida joining Puerto Rico and some other Caribbean Islands in some sort of amazing combination. The unknown would be Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions.

I repped you based on what you bolded.

I honestly don't see any issue on which people would feel so threatened that they would sell as much as they could in a hurry and "run" unless there was an immediate threat of some kind of slavery -- and I just don't see that happening.

I mean, how many of those who are pro-choice would move within a year (if at all) if their state/region completely outlawed abortion in ALL cases, or how many NRA activists would do the same if their state/region made it illegal for any one person to own more than three firearms? I don't think there would be more than just a very small percentage, like less than 5%, in either case.

(I think that would make an interesting question for a thread though -- "What kind of legislation would your state pass to cause you to immediately move from that state as soon as you possibly could?" i think the answers to that might be VERY interesting!)

Why do you think any states would want to secede only to join other countries???

We here in Massachusetts may think that there are some idiotic regions but they are our idiotic regions and we'll be damned if anyone thinks they are gonna put their filthy mits on them.

If the Red and Blue states split into their own countries, it would be difficult for air travel as we know it. The red states might impose an airspace restriction or tax for airlines that want to fly over "fly over country", so a flight from JFK to SFO might have to go over Canada or have taxes that have to paid to the government of the red states. The red states with the exception of Alaska might be fine, being all contiguous. However, the blue states will have the benefit of controlling all of the ports on the mainland west. So products from China would likely be cheaper.

I'd expect Sinclair to start a broadcast network for the red states, while Univision, TBN, Daystar and Fox will be available for the red states.

ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS will be available in the blue states.

United, Delta, jetBlue would primarily service the blue states as national airlines, while American (merged with Alaska) and Southwest (renamed Midwest) the red states as national airlines, although there will still be flights between red states and blue states.

The red states though will have a wall that separates itself from the blue states and Mexico and Canda largely to prevent liberals and illegal immigrants from coming in so easily. Driving between the states will be possible but painful.

Blue states would have universal healthcare. Red states would have private insurance still, but if you didn't qualify because of pre-existing conditions, megachurches would have healthcare plans controlling all aspects of one's healthcare (like the Kaiser Healthcare model).

Clearly we differ in our opinions. IMO the country is taking a very dark turn. We have ancestors that left Austria in the 1800s. Many of those that remained did not survive the wars that followed. Turns out the ones that left made a smart choice. As an example, the Pacific Northwest has much more in common with British Columbia than Alabama. We trade, share an employee base, etc. and we the culture is similar. Seceding for us would simply be changing the border.

Yes comrade, your murderous desires towards American citizens shows your loyalty to your country.

If it happened, I'd want to be a citizen in the one that allows guns.

So do a lot of other states compared with other states. For example, I think Wisconsin has more in common with Canada than with Alabama OR SoCal.

I wish I could rep you again.
