She had the choice to turn down the role. Way back when Adam West was offered the role of James Bond but wisely turned it down saying it should go to a British actor.
If they wanted to make a film about a woman British spy they could have created a film called MI6 and created a new agent who happens to be a woman.
BOND is not peripheral. Giving someone else the '007' badge because Bond retires means nothing. It's no different from what happens with football jerseys when a player retires.
.
In keeping with your sports analogy, when a player has been particularly legendary, a team actually will often retire their jersey number so no one else can wear it.
I think a pretty good case can be made that, in terms of fictional British secret service agents, James Bond 007 qualifies as a "hall-of-famer".
Because - everyone, take a very deep breath, and sit down - Bond is FICTION!!!! YES!!!!!! And ESCAPIST FICTION too!!!! It is not, nor has it ever been, intended to cause you to think or to bear any resemblance whatever to the real world!!!! It's meant to entertain you (and cause you to buy popcorn and soda) for a couple hours. And that's it.
It seems like you might be the only one who is getting excited.
Most everyone seems to realize that this is a work of commercial fiction. Though art is in a lot of ways a reflection of society, and beams back a particular reflection of what society "is" to us.
Finally, people on here are allowed to express their preference that 007 be a male, or even (given the way he was envisaged by Ian Fleming, in an era when almost all British/English men were white) a white dude with an English accent.

Yes, art is a reflection of society, but today also is used to mold society and push a solely Far Left and Radical agenda, much of the time. Not all of the time, but lately a lot of the time to the point where it damages the entertainment value of the product.
If you seriously think that anything about the Bond franchise is a big social issue, well....
My only beef with it is that if it bombs....we're going to have to hear a whole bunch of crying about how it's all the fault of racism and mysoginy and not that they didn't deliver the goods.
The actress is already rolling around in a pile of identity politics instead of keeping her head up and pushing past the internet trolls and so forth.
For example, imagine if instead it were a young Samuel L. Jackson that had been cast. His response to critics wouldn't be like that. It would involve one finger and a threat to put his boot somewhere uncomfortable.

The problem with that is that it has been done.....and been done.....and been done......and been done.....and been done.
It's known as Nikita (Nikita, Point of No Return, Black Cat, La Femme Nikita, Nikita). Further, the wild and crazy thing about that is that while Nikita has not usually been British, the concept of Nikita is BRITISH....it's based on the stories around "My Fair Lady".
So, be it 007 or something else, it is rather damned if you do or damned if you don't..

That seems to be the current leaning, it's true. But it's been used in other ways as well, not that long ago. For example, for several decades (until fairly recently in fact), every single terrorist in a Hollywood movie was an Arab. Or so it seemed.
Not all of the time, but lately a lot of the time to the point where it damages the entertainment value of the product.
I've heard this a few times recently on various forums.
Do you have any examples?
I am sincerely curious.
