A huge subset of US conservatives treat concepts and institutions as you would a schoolyard bully - profess to follow him, express contempt for those too weak to stand against him, and he'll reward you.
The constitution defines government power? Profess your love for the constitution, and you should be rewarded with power.
Market economy decides where money flows? Profess to love the market and money will flow to you.
God sits in judgment of good and evil? Profess to love God, and you'll be deemed good.
People lack homes? Make them hated non-persons to be chased away, they're not actual humans like you. And because you're an actual human, you'll never be homeless.
Pandemic? Only the weak will die. And the mere act of saying so puts you among the strong.
They confuse strength with hate for the weak.
The resentment comes when, say, the market fails to reward them for their loyalty. Hence the crab-pot hate for the actual successful, as well.
Its funny to hear people talk tough, like they are real patriots...but then to see, there is a distinct line they will not cross...thats when 'patriotism' starts to impact their personal lives too much! LOL
So basically, they are 'fair weather patriots'. LOL
