I hear about the whole idea about dems being the ones who supported slavery. Or supported Jim Crow. The counter-argument is that conservative and liberal were all over the place whether it was republican or democrat.

So the argument is that democrats were pro-slavery because the crowd consisted of "conservative Dems". But eventually, when it came to groups like the "Dixiecrats", conservatives became more republican.

All of is a bunch of nonsense. Lincoln himself said he had no intention of black people being treated equally. Racism was all over the political spectrum. People just chose whatever party suited them in other areas while maintaining their racism. That’s why it took the U.S.hundreds of years to recognize basic human rights.

If you are asking in the current standing of a republican and democrat. Sure its feasible.

The parties are hopefully NOT so staunch that they are incapable of the spectrum that consists. That Grey area of thinking and rationalizations.

You can't really compare the political parties of the Civil War era to the parties of today. Both Republicans and Democrats have evolved since then to be the opposite of what they once were. For example, in Lincoln's day Republicans were passionately anti-slavery. They were a lot closer to the Democrats of today. On the other hand, most Southern slave owners were Democrats. The South remained solidly Democratic until the mid-20th century. They were called "Dixiecrats." Eisenhower, who enforced school desegregation, was a Republican. Then, when the Democratic LBJ administration passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that ensured Southern blacks were finally allowed to vote, the South abandoned the Democratic party and turned solid Republican.

There's only one conservative democrat these days - Joe Manchin.

There's plenty of liberal republicans though.

I could probably be considered both, depending on how anyone's personal biases go. I refer to myself as centrist but also have political beliefs that fall firmly on one side of the divide or the other.

Conservative democrats exist. A good example of such are your church going African Americans in the south. And yes liberal Republicans exist.

Don't forget about Barry goldwater strategy for Republicans. Also blacks started to abandon the Republican party during the 1930s thanks in part due to Democrat FDR.

I was a Goldwater disciple due to his stand on Viet Nam, drive it or park it, from what we have spent we could have bought it, the records indicate we have killed every man, woman and child in Viet Nam, twice.

He was also a staunch environmentalist.

IIRC, he was first and always a states righter. The southern strategy latched onto him like flies on sh--. H never denounced them. He did make it very clear many times he thought it was up to states and businesses that refused to serve blacks were stupid.
