I'm curious about the general population in this forum with respect to political leanings. A poll might be too limiting, but a general discussion might be helpful. Topics might include:

• If you're familiar with this forum, do you feel most posters are conservative, progressive, or a mix?
• If one group predominates, are opposing views discouraged?
• Do you feel comfortable hearing views that differ from your own?
• Have you ever radically changed your viewpoint based on reason and evidence?
• How certain are you that your perspective is the correct one?

My objective is to get people to be willing to listen to each other and be willing to compromise.

• If one group predominates, are opposing views discouraged? N/A
• Do you feel comfortable hearing views that differ from your own? Of course, or I wouldn't be here.
• Have you ever radically changed your viewpoint based on reason and evidence? Yes
• How certain are you that your perspective is the correct one? Very. The "other side" typically isn't aware of half the information "our side" receives, so they're not able to correctly evaluate it and reach a logical conclusion based on all available information.

My objective is to get people to be willing to listen to each other and be willing to compromise.
Answers above.

Answers above. It is too easy for disingenuous actors to manipulate the narrative through this very lightly moderated forum. Sock puppets yelling things will never listen to other people or be willing to compromise.

• If you're familiar with this forum, do you feel most posters are conservative, progressive, or a mix?mostly very conservative - count the threads - it runs 3/1 conservative
• If one group predominates, are opposing views discouraged? for the most part, yes, but there are some open minded posters. I'm smack dab in the center, which means I get called a right wing nut and a liberal whacko routinely
• Do you feel comfortable hearing views that differ from your own? that's why I'm here. I want to hear views that aren't my own
• Have you ever radically changed your viewpoint based on reason and evidence? yes. I've protested on both sides of the abortion issue; I was prolife when I was young, and I'm firmly prochoice as an older adult. ya see stuff.
• How certain are you that your perspective is the correct one? often not sure. i'm open to change on many things

My objective is to get people to be willing to listen to each other and be willing to compromise.
this will be interesting

That's my sense, too, that this forum is at least 85% conservative, and among those there appear to be some hard core, scary folks. When forums are anonymous like this, people feel free to let their creative imaginations run wild and they may come across much differently than they may in RL.

I'm going with 60% conservative. We lean right, but that's all.

No way is it 85%

I’m “this crazy” in real life.

Forum is probably 70-30 Republican/conservative. Maybe 75%.

Opposing views aren’t discouraged. I don’t know what that really means. You post, you get what you get.

I’m an anarchist so well over 99% of the views here are against my own. Of course I’m comfortable with it. People are different.

Yes, I’ve changed my viewpoint. Basically all anarchists are recovering statists.

My core belief (the social contract is a fallacy)...I’m just about as sure of as anything else in my life. I’ve never heard a convincing argument against it but I’m always willing to listen.

I think discouragement often comes in the form of ad hominem attacks: rather than address the issues, the individual person is criticized. E.g., you support X so you must be Y & Z.
