Glad to see the debate on this issue growing. I lean more on the side of those who believe that some of this aid has distracted too many African leaders from reforming their political and economic approaches in ways that will develop their countries.

I also think way too many of Africa's post-colonial leaders made a big mistake of adopting various forms of communism and socialism as the path for economic development and rejecting capitalism. Two post-colonial African countries that were more market oriented,The Ivory Coast and Botswana, have had sub-sharan Africa's two best post-colonial economies. I'd like to see more African countries take a good look at Botswana's economic approach.

I cannot for the life of me understand how anybody (the Catholic Church for example) can preach against birth control. What planet do they live on? If you cannot feed one child, why do you have more and more? I know that sounds ignorant and cold to some people, but it really is plain old common-sense. BTW, I've studied this subject, so I am not simply making some off the cuff remark. I say the same thing about Americans.

Did anybody ever see "Beyond Borders" with Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen? You really should see it, it deals with aid workers in many countires. It is a GOOD movie, not preachy...interesting.

I don't see anyone arguing for limiting people with to one child nor for enacting an Eugenics program or encouraging Africans to kill off their "unacceptable" children.

What we are saying is that distributing condoms to Africa which as an extremely high AIDS rate and to the more densely populated regions where people have a hard time feeding their kids.

Being against deciding how many kids people have have is just a humane thing to do and if you are that opposed to abortion, fair enough. But opposing birth control just because is really counter-productive.

We have been giving them money for years, and it is still an AIDS infested ****hole. It is about time to tighten the purse strings.

So let them decide if they want condoms. The discussion is that they are not intelligent enough to decide for themselves and the west or who ever has to decide for them.I am not aginst peole deciding that theywant to use birth controkl ;it is just the elite view that we need to decide for them.
