Puerto Rico is an American colony, so ultimately what happens there is our responsibility.

No thanks. Our country is corrupt enough. Adding Puerto Rico to the union would drag the average down a couple of notches more.

No, it's a possession. Big difference. It was colonized by Spain, and we acquired it after the Spanish American War. We never colonized Puerto Rico, therefore it's not an American colony.

Hundreds of thousands have moved to the states and do pay taxes.

And guess what, nobody wants to pay taxes, even the Democrats (they want other people to pay taxes).

Guam and the Virgin Islands only have about 100,000 people. Puerto Rico is 3.2 million.

that's what I want to know. What's the reality of the situation, what are the facts?

Quit with all the euphemisms like "unicorporated territory". It's a COLONY in the fullest sense of the definition. Puerto Rico is a Latin American country that belongs to the United States. It is the property of the United States.

The sooner people realize that we are still holding colonies, the sooner we will do the right thing and let them go.

The U.S. federal taxes all residents must pay include US customs taxes,[1] federal commodity taxes, and federal payroll taxes (Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, and Unemployment taxes).

Not all Puerto Rico employees and corporations pay federal income taxes. Federal law requires payment of federal income tax from the following residents and corporations only: federal government employees in Puerto Rico,[a][b][4] residents who are members of the United States miltary, those with income sources outside of Puerto Rico, those individuals or corporations who do business with the federal government, and those Puerto Rico-based corporations that intend to send funds to the United States. Other employers and employees pay no federal income taxes, although they still pay all other federal taxes.

Good try though.
You can fuss over their legal status and obligation all you want, rant to Congress. At this point they either need to become a state or an independent nation, this quasi- semi-autonomous status has run its course.

That's when you cut the chain loose, let the dog go, or return it to it's previous owner.
