Recession With a Difference: Women Face Special Burden
Hit hard by job losses and the pandemic’s effect on schooling and child care, American women face short-term difficulties and long-term repercussions.

By Patricia Cohen

For millions of working women, the coronavirus pandemic has delivered a rare and ruinous one-two-three punch. First, the parts of the economy that were smacked hardest and earliest by job losses were ones where women dominate — restaurants, retail businesses and health care. Then a second wave began taking out local and state government jobs, another area where women outnumber men. The third blow has, for many, been the knockout: the closing of child care centers and the shift to remote schooling. That has saddled working mothers, much more than fathers, with overwhelming household responsibilities.

Thread title fail. It sounds like the impacts have more to do with certain job categories than it has to do with gender. Why women tend to gravitate to certain professions is an entirely different question. Why does lack of daycare and home schooling affect women more than men? That's a decision made by the family.

Good post, I wasn't going to read all the tripe but you sure flagged a doozy.

"I'm not sure why it all fell on me" she says.

Probably because you're trying to start up a home business and making no money while the spouse is actually making the money that keeps the applesauce flowing.

Boo freakin' hoo, little miss I lost my nanny and now have to deal with this kid.

That gal has one major case of first world problems and entitlement.

I usually think the posts about women’s “suffering” are stupid, but this one actually has merit.

One can argue that women made poor choices in careers, but they absolutely are being his hardest by job loss. Not sure how big an issue with childcare is. If they’ve lost jobs (as I have), does it matter if their kids are home? Some will be affected, some won’t. It will be a hardship if the woman has to take a job that requires going in to work and there’s no spouse at home.

a new mom quits her job after a 3 year career and starts her own business. However this worked, they were able to budget for a nanny in 2019.

I , in no way, think they made poor choices. At least they Have/had a career afterall.

Covid is Everyone's problem. I dislike this race to see who got it worse. I mean,..what do they propose we do about it? I didn't read anything there about solutions. Maybe I missed it.

Did we expect Covid to be Equitable?!

I was merely pointing out that in this particular instance, you can’t argue that women aren’t hit harder. They are. There’s plenty to argue about when it comes to other areas where women are supposedly discriminated against or treated unfairly - like the debunked $0.79 for women to the $1.00 for men.

In some ways, being a woman myself, I think I have it a lot better than most men I know. In other areas there seems to be less equity. I do think western, first-world women are some of the most fortunate humans on the planet.

You’re right that this isn’t a contest to see who’s worse off. One other point to this (and I’ll admit I didn’t read everything) is that even if women are being affected more, I don’t necessarily agree that they should benefit before anyone else that needs help.

And now, it’s time for me to file for my weekly unemployment. Because I chose an insecure career. (I loved my prior job, though, and wouldn’t change much even if I could go back for a re-do.). I’m just going to have to get creative about future employment and maybe suck up a crappy job or two. Done it before, and I can do it again.

I just have to say that I know stay-at-home moms who do nothing but complain but they can't get out of their freaking pajamas because raising a baby is just so hard
I raised little babies and was still able to do laundry and cook dinner for my spouse and take a shower all while working part time. I think it comes down to time management and a lot of women just don't have any time management skills. I think this is because they get hung up on minutia and waste so much time during the day obsessing over nothing. then before you know it they're still in their leggings dinner hasn't been cooked showers haven't been had and the house is a freaking disaster. Then their husband comes home from work and they're so stressed they have to just hand the child off to the husband even though he worked a terrible job all day dealing with toxic people and commuting but you get to stay home all day and you're freaking pajamas. Please.

working a full-time job and commuting is absolutely no comparison to taking care of a child in your own home.

SAHM's dont necessarily have to worry about taking a hit from job losses caused by the pandemic.
I raised kids as a single mom (widow), working two part time jobs, while getting my degree. Its not a pee peeing contest. We all face challenges.
