This is going to be a big problem for Republicans in the next few years. But I don't know if they'll be able to tackle it directly, and admit how far they've left behind all their fundamental ideas. And this is by Bret Stephens, a conservative writer.

Goodbye Principled Conservatism
Under Trump, the politics of resentment now govern the Republican Party.

This form of politics — not as a complement to statecraft, but as the outpouring of resentment — is what has come to define the conservative movement in the age of Trump.
Conservatives used to admire Edmund Burke. Not anymore, insofar as Burke stood for the importance of manners and morals to the health of the state. Conservatives used to admire Milton Friedman. Not anymore, insofar as Friedman stood for free trade, sound money and a balanced budget. Conservatives used to admire Scoop Jackson. Not anymore, insofar as the Washington state Democrat was a champion of the idea that human rights should stand at the center of U.S. foreign policy. Conservatives used to admire Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Not anymore, insofar as both Reagan and Bush believed in humane immigration reform, international coalition building, standing up to Russian tyrants and, when possible, making deals with Democrats. politics of resentment now govern the Republican Party.

Theyve gone all in on Trumpism. If they could find a way to separate from conservatives and still win elections they would have years ago.

Trumpism isn't going away (unfortunately).

Though I suspect a few smarter and less self-destructive versions of Trump will be coming to a theater near you before long.

Democrats have left behind their liberal principles too.

JFK was all about finding ways to serve your country and build the system. This years Democratic primary was all about finding ways to get more freebies and drain the system.

Look at the constant denials of the scientific method . For example the BLM movement has a predetermined conclusion that mass systemic racism has lead to blacks being disproportionately shot by police and any statistical evidence of crimes, the gap being bigger with Asians to whites, males to females, young adults to old adults must be thrown out the window.

Look at the blatant racism of many leftists with their social justice talk. Only whites can be racist, you have to be an anti-racist or you are a racist, etc.

Equality has taken a back seat as we push an agenda of special privilege for select groups.

Not judging people by the color of their skin has taken a back seat as identity politics demands that we do so.

Local leaders in Portland and Seattle have enabled outright chaos and disorder on the streets.

Tolerance, opposing censorship, and diversity except for conservative thoughts.

"I disagree with every word you just said, but I'd die to protect your right to say it" to "cancel culture."

Exactly, you don't have to be a Trumpist, a Conservative, a Republican, or an Independent to see the craziness of all the different directions recent Democrats have gone. I'll call it Wokism. A good example is all of the Democrat contenders trying to Outwoke the others. What happen to the Bill Clintons of the Democrat party

Well when the unemployment rate is sky-high because Biden sent your job to China, and your paying $8 for a gallon gas because Biden decimated the oil industry, and when you can't get a hospital bed because Biden filled them with illegals, the Democrats will be once again on the back burner.
