What does seem to be very clear from the 2020 election, is it does not matter which candidate the dems put on their ticket. It doesn't matter if the (D) candidate even campaigns or not, Democrat voters will just blindly and reflexively pull the lever for (D), no matter how old, senile, racist or weak their candidate is.
Then why did the democrats lose in 2016? More stayed home.
