Sadly, the retired firefighter was mortally wounded in the shootout.
The video is pretty eerie. I hope he was able to mortally wound at least one of them (one of the guys looks like he may have been hit as he falls back, but almost certainly won't seek legitimate medical attention if so for fear of being arrested).
You cannot pay me to live in that hellhole city of Chicago.
You get what you accept and the residents of Chicago accept lawless behavior. Not just those who live in the high crime areas but also the those who live where crime is low. It isn't happening on their street or section of town, so it's ok.
Unfortunately the victim thought he was dealing with one armed carjacker and left the cover his vehicle provided. As far as you all saying you'd never go to Chicago, I'd never visit the West Side for sure, but the rest of the city itself is magnificent and one of my favorite places. I'm glad none of you will visit, there are enough visitors to make the place crowded every summer, so please stay away, thanks.
Chiraq claims another life... Can't democrats give peace a chance?

The thugs are likely minors, a part of an organized crime ring, using an electronic device to lift a signal off the owner’s fob.
Jeep’s are targeted for theft all over the US. Car thefts have been increasing all over the US, for years.
This victim fired the first shot. Had he been unarmed or chosen not to pullout his firearm, there may not have been a shootout and the car’s owner would be alive.
Unless Police just happened to be on the scene when this went down, there is nothing that could have prevented this once shots were fired.
This happened in a relatively safe community on the far s outside of the city. The stolen car was abandoned the next day in a nearby suburb. It has a bullet hole in a door. With some luck there might be prints and there will be a match.

Why??? These thugs just came out of nowhere to take an innocent life? I thought Black Lives Matter.
Where’s the outrage?
Likely, the thugs were cruising the area looking for opportunities. Devises are routinely used to lift a signal off the fob.
The retired firefighter with the bag of popcorn fired the first shot and gun fire was exchanged. No one knows what was going through his mind at the time. It certainly would not have ended in a worse outcome had he not pulled his own firearm.
More on the pervasiveness of devices that transfer signal from owner’s fobs:
1. The car is not worth your life. Surrender it.
2. They had the drop on him. Don’t pull second and reveal yourself as a deadly threat to them unless there is an imminent threat to your life. These were carjackers, not assassins.
3. He actually had the fight won. These guys are cowards...as soon as he fought back the scum took to running (except Suspect 2, he looks like he was the most dangerous one)...but...
4. He gave up his cover to keep his gun on target. Not that he should have stopped shooting...you fire until the threat is neutralized. But he advanced out of cover (his car) and into the open.
5. “Defund” and “Dismantle” and “Abolish” the police in action.
