Honestly the debates were much better before the conspiracy theorists took over the forum. A good deal of that is on Trump's shoulders.
It hasn't been all that long since the right quoted Friedman, Williams and Sowell, not Alex Jones. This forum, and the right, is much worse off for it. The right's courting of Bubba I think will have negative consequences in the long run to both our nation and the Republican Party.
I have a natural desire to teach people. If you're willing to listen to me, I'll gladly tell you everything I know.
Usually when I respond here, it is when people say things that aren't true. In most cases it isn't intentional, they don't realize what they are saying isn't true. They're repeating what someone else said, or they are leaving out relevant details which will mislead their listeners into false conclusions.
The other times I respond here is when people ask a question. And I'll answer pretty much any question to the best of my ability.

It is especially difficult when media and journalists are constantly being assaulted and called out as fake news it is so important to get the truth out. That is why I post in the politics form. To get the facts out there and the truth because our media is undermined every day.
It's always good to open yourself up to criticism from opposing sides. It either reaffirms your beliefs or challenges them, both are worthwhile IMO.
Having debates will make you better at debating, but some people lack self-awareness, and these websites can become echo-chambers of partisans. Who, because they don't get the adequate push-back, assume they must be right.
I've been wondering about this since political forums were created 2 decades ago.
Discussing it changes nothing, and there simply isn't much knowledge to be gained; other than endless/time wasting debates. Considering nobody has the benefit of seeing others facial expressions/body language, the conversations are handicapped from the onset.
So I must ask, what do you gain from it?.
I've learned quite a bit over the years. It is difficult to weed through the emotional, personal attacks....but there is always someone who is willing and able to present well thought out arguments. There have been a few issues that I have shifted or gained a better knowledge about.
Sometimes I learn little tidbits that I didn't know -- a story, an essay, a quote.......and sometimes a comment can spark me to do a little more research on the topic.
And then there is the ability to just vent......work out my understanding of an issue, etc.
There is lots of garbage to weed through....but it canb e worth it.
I used to be more into it when I was young, but now that I have kids and wife, it a big wast of time. Majority of people who post on here are coming here will an objective to spread their gospel and don’t care what the other side says.

Mostly to vent.
