As always, idiots want to inconvenience and harass drivers, you face the consequences. The driver did the correct thing in these situations, last thing you want is the mob to pull you out of your car and maim/kill you.
One thing I thought intriguing is that this protest was against ICE and supporting detainees on a hunger strike. BLM may be changing their strategy and slowly starting to worm their way into bringing 'Brown' people into the mix (I saw a few name dropping references to Brown people on the BLM websites).
A vehicle plowed into a crowd of about 50 people at a protest on Friday afternoon in the middle of Manhattan, injuring multiple people, the New York City police department said.
The incident happened after 4pm at the corner of 39th Street and Third Avenue in midtown east, police said, adding that the woman behind the wheel of the BMW sedan who drove into the crowd was detained for questioning by law enforcement.
The New York fire department said six people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Police and fire officials said the injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening.
BLM has long had other backgrounds involved. In a number of areas, these protests are more non-black than black.
Also, what makes you assume the background of the detainees? This is NYC. They could very well be black or black/mixed Hispanics etc. They could be of any background. NYC has immigrants from everywhere.

Not who you were talking to, but the protestors were blocking the road (technically illegal) and then surrounded the vehicle, one protestor leaning over the front of the car screaming something and at least one protestor started hitting the car as the driver tried to get down the road. Given what we have seen at other leftist protests one could assume that they were in danger.
I wouldn't have gunned it, but the video doesn't show what was happening right beforehand either.
These liberals need to understand cause and effect. They started it. When you appear to threaten people's safety, sometimes they often go into "fight or flight" mode. When you are in a car surrounded by a mob of people that are breaking laws and instigating a showdown with you the fight or flight both include hitting the gas pedal.
Grass root organizations frequently join together to protest Fill in the Blank. Most people, regardless of their politics, ethnicity, race etc do not engage in protests.
This group is no more representative of the Left than those who engage in Unite the Right demonstrations or QAnon or armed militia, is of the Right.

Looking at the video, it seems there were more cops than protestors, and I didn't hear any screaming or hitting at the driver.

You don't know what I would or wouldn't do. You are an extremely disingenuous person for playing Nostradamus.
It is disingenuous Moderator cut: - to ignore facts like a protestor was hitting the car. When people breaking laws surround a car, start hitting a car, things like this happen. Cause and effect. Smarter people would know this was a likely possibility - especially after multiple incidents like this. These protestors tend to not be sharp apparently.

If this is the same incident then no, the driver is a crazed loon and definitely did not do the correct thing.
Who knows what the driver was thinking or what their background could be. Imagine a guy suffering from PTSD is suddenly surrounded by angry people waving signs and overwhelming fear kicks in the fight or flight mode. There could also be drugs involved but who knows.
What most of us do know, because it is common sense, is to stay out of the road.
If you play in traffic you might get hit by a car and a card board sign is not going to help you.
