Men are no more likely to get Covid, but are three times more likely to get so sick from it they have to be put in the ICU.
Quote:
A large international study of COVID-19 patients confirms that men are more likely than women to become seriously ill and die of the disease.

Researchers pooled data from government websites and the medical literature on more than 3.1 million people infected with the new coronavirus in 46 countries. They found no difference in the proportion of male and female patients who contracted COVID-19. Men, however, were nearly three times more likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit and 39% more likely to die from COVID-19.

In a report published in Nature Communications, the investigators said previous studies have found "fundamental differences" in the way men's bodies and women's bodies respond to infections.
Unlike the media narrative about "communities of color", it appears that men as a group actually are more vulnerable to Covid due to fundamental differences in their biology. So why is there no discussion of prioritizing men to receive the vaccine?

Turns out men and women really are different after all.
Quote:
"Men and women have differences in almost all arms of the immune system. These range from the early immune responses to viral infection, to T cell responses, B cell responses and immune memory," said study author Dr. Kate Webb, a consultant pediatric rheumatologist at the University of Cape Town and The Francis Crick Institute in London.
"There are many potential reasons for these differences in immunity: hormones have immunological effects and women have two X chromosomes compared to one in men. X chromosomes are packed full of genes which code for immunity."

I have been genuinely surprised, given that we have consistently seen Covid stats broken down by age and race, that we haven’t seen the numbers for gender. In my family, which has been hit very hard by this scourge, it’s been only the males that have died.

I didn't read the full study, but I'm assuming risks by age, immune system altering comorbidities, and odds of exposure are probably stronger associations than sex.

There are no differences, only societal constructs.

Yes, being old is even more of a risk than being male.

However, because the data showed that infection rates are roughly equal between men and women, differences in hygiene behavior by gender are unlikely to explain the disparity in disease severity, the researchers said.
Other explanations for the disparity include men being more likely to have certain preexisting health conditions, or comorbidities, that put them at risk. The researchers said, however, that they did not have enough data on these factors.
The team noted, though, that there are no marked sex differences in the proportions of adults globally with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes, and those are the most commonly reported comorbidities in hospitalized Covid-19 patients. Men are also more likely to smoke, but the study said smoking had not emerged as a clear risk factor.

Male and female constructs? The Japanese robotics industry is hard at work that.

The theory is, and I learned this in college, that our gender roles are only defined by how we are raised. I am sure there will be studies on how these socially developed constructs affect people's immune systems.

No doubt they will determine that the weakness of male immune systems against Covid is evidence of toxic masculinity. All that misogyny builds up in the blood and messes with T-cells.
