Fairly obvious conclusion given the stagnant wages(despite rising productivity), wealth concentration, and monopolization trends/shrinking GDP share of small businesses.
Wages have been flat in terms of actual buying power for 40ish years compared to just about any marker you want to use to measure the wealth gains of the highest income groups.
Studies can be wrong. I bet if I looked at the details, I could poke holes in it.
Buying power... it hasn't been flat for everyone.
Buying power hasn't been flat for the poor. Their income remains at very little. But when there are increases in the minimum wages and increases in business costs because of burdensome regulations, it causes prices to increase - which makes it harder for the poor to purchase goods.
what are the circumstances that allowed him to earn all that money, but not pay commensurate child support?
Honestly I never could understand that, and my mother refused to discuss it. So no idea. The child support was.....laughable. A lot I suspect was her unwillingness to go back to court over it as his wealth didn't really kick off until they were separated and he married his new much much wealthier wife. But she was never willing to discuss it, and shes dead now. My mother and fathers situation was....complex.
And recently (last decade or so?) he lost a lot of it.
Lots of men have the money but don’t pay child support. They don’t feel obliged so they don’t
Well, if the state will force all unwilling parents to pay child support, then things would be different. Of course, I oppose the current child support laws in general and hope that they can be significantly changed with the creation of a sufficiently large UBI for every person, including perhaps for every child.
