It is believed that Social Security has paid out at least 8+ Billion in excess of improper benefits.

There are still 6,000,000 active social security accounts for people 112 years old or older. The problem? The entire planet only has 40 people in that age group.

Congress wasn't able to pass a bill to stop deceased people from getting payments.

Throw in Social Security Disability and the amount of people on disability has skyrocketed in recent decades, leaving some to wonder if people are taking advantage of it.

When my mom dies, we were told by the hospice there was no need for us to notify SS. The funeral homes have to do it.

What if no contact with the deceased or their family is made to a funeral home? Who notifies SS?

There is a running death list. Deaths are reported by law.

Medical professionals are required before a person can be buried, and they report to counties and the Federal government. The Funeral home may also report by law.

No one is risking their licenses over grandma.

I'm thinking of people who are recluses to begin with and want to be buried at sea. I could just dump my brother overboard, as is his wish. He lives on a boat in the Pacific. No one would ever know. No slip fees. And, he moves around. The other live a boards might notice he's not around. Every couple months, he anchors somewhere and takes a dingy into shore to grocery shop or get fresh water.

The only way I'd know is he wouldn't respond to email or FB.

From what he tells me, there's a flotilla of people just sailing all over the Pacific.

Then there's the whole retiree community living in RVs all over the country. Who would know if someone didn't need medical or funeral help?

These are the "put grandma in the freezer" and collect her SS checks scenarios.
These hit the news every so often.

How do they define "Active". Meaning is an illegal using it to work, pays in, but won't be able to collect?

Or are they all paying out?

Second, I have a sibling in healthcare, people are absolutely working the system to collect disability.

Seems like a self funding exercise - assemble a team of investigators that go through the records of every centenarian and determine their breathing status

Should we also ask these 6 million elderly folks over the age of 112 that are collecting SS who they voted for in the last election? On second thought, never mind because we already know and his name is not Don.

Maybe they are busy spending the $415MM that Congress put into the Ukraine cookie jar as part of the latest Covid “stimulus” bill. We live in interesting times.

Ultimately it is the survivor’s responsibility to notify SS of a death.

Failure to do so means benefits continue. In some cases, benefits are paid directly to nursing homes. About 75% of nursing homes are for profit and heavily reliant on state Medicaid for subsidy.

Could easily round up more than enough retired people to volunteer to track every single recipient over the age of X to determine who is benefiting from continued benefit and cross reference with county death certificates.

We don’t seem to get too outraged about the massive fraud against Medicare and state Medicaid by some hospital systems, healthcare providers and nursing homes. Heck, CEOs walk away and at least one of them was elected Governor of his state and then to the Senate.
