She is the epitome of the ugly American stereotype thinking she is above the laws of the nation she is visiting. She gives us all a bad name.
The initial requirement of her to quarantine was not arbitrary - everyone has to do it; it was of limited duration; and in proportion to the disease - at the time the 14 day quarantine was the standard. It was her action that was not fair to the people on the island. Apparently she even signed a document saying she would not to leave her place of isolation without permission and not to remove the monitoring device. She's being detained from a place where she can call her family, its not a Saudi dungeon. That our tax dollars are being spent on her for State Dept. consular services is a waste for which she should also reimburse the US govt.
Our government has been doing that, a long time now
Eh, it may be too early to get into politics, but it's the politics forum so, Look - I have no idea if you're referring to the last 3.9 years, or the last 50 years, but my comment is the same:
The average citizens around the world view the US gov't. the same as you view theirs...which is to say, Not at All. They do not care. They have practically no opinion, and even less understanding or education of our system. Are you fully versed in the subtleties of Swedish Gov't? Or Albania? Or Greece? Do you know when they change leaders, or why, or what they find important? No? And that's how they feel about us. They don't. It's a prime conceit of many Americans to believe other nations care what you think. They do not.
So - if you're a tourist in Caymans, it will matter very little to the average citizen there that you are American. You might as well be Hungarian or Chinese. They do not care. They have laws. She broke them. It's very simple.
Well, when you are guest in another country you play by their rules or suffer the consequence. We are not immune because of our arrogant thinking that some how American's are privileged.
At least she didn't go to North Korea to commit a crime.
