Well, I suppose we have long ago abandoned the principle that when you move to another country, you should make the effort to learn the language as a productive citizen of your adopted country. Nowadays, in America, you are considered an evil, unfeeling, bigoted monster if you dare question why someone doesn't speak, read, and/or write English, and every effort should be made in our country to accommodate non-English speakers.

Sheesh.

Medical experts fear the scarcity of Latino or Spanish-speaking doctors could lead to worse health outcomes for the state’s Hispanic communities, who, so far, represent more than 700,000 COVID-19 cases and 10,000 virus-related deaths in California.

“You can’t plant strawberries in your front room. You can’t stay at home and be a farmworker. Hence, because they’re more exposed, they’re more likely to become infected,” said Dr. David E. Hayes-Bautista, director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA. “Now, at that point, the Latino doctor shortage suddenly becomes critical.”

California is home to a large immigrant community with limited English proficiency. About 44% of Californians speak a language besides English at home, according to a study by the Latino Politics and Policy Initiative at UCLA. An analysis by the Public Policy Institute of California shows about 53% of immigrants say they speak Spanish — the most popular language among immigrants in the state — at home.

So please, California voters, please vote to declare California a bilingual state and require all residents to be able to speak, read and understand Spanish, and then -- please, Californians -- do the rest of the nation a favor and vote to secede!

I mean, I think this basic idea worked for Quebec and still does, doesn't it?

Or went back.

These stories treat the latino community as victims, that they are disproportionally impacted.
The virus doesnt make preferences, its their behavior causing that impact. Its well known they love large family gatherings on weekends, like hundreds of people. One need only drive by any public park in southern california late sunday night and see the piles of trash left behind for evidence. Go use the bathroom and the walls are tagged with their kids graffiti.
They cant read english so generally ignore social distancing reminders placed in retail stores, and rarely discipline their children so they run around at will.
Finally what other cultural group regularly crowds single family apts with 2,3, even 4 families? The group gathering we are asked to avoid over the holidays is something they do every day. You wonder who the hell can afford the $2000 a month rent in the southwest for apts with no amenities well it isnt americans unless they want to lower their living standards to TJ levels.
Yeah theyre all victims now we all need to learn.spanish or theyll die. No habla.

“I had a question for my doctor and my husband asked me why I hadn’t asked it: because first of all, they don’t speak Spanish, and second of all, they don’t look at me,” one study participant told researchers.

She has it wrong: she doesn’t speak English but expects the doctors to speak Spanish.

Yes! If they choose to come to OUR country, then its their responsibility to learn our language not ask us to accommodate them. I'm the son of LEGAL Asian immigrants and my parents learned English and I'm told my own English is "country" or "Southern" whenever I travel to other parts of the country. Nobody has ever mistaken me for someone not born in the US.

And its ridiculous that Hispanics get affirmative action since whatever disadvantage they suffer was from their original countries.
