People have been predicting the end of NYC for 325 years.

I would never bet against NYC.

I disagree! Those moving out of high tax states are conservatives and when they move to another state they vote conservatively.

Just look at Las Vegas, which was a conservative city to start with, and with 1 out of 3 moving there from CA, the city grows more conservative by the day. They're very anti-tax, except for more police protection. A light rail line was recently shot down, which would have been the first light rail line in Las Vegas, because it would cost too much, and they voted in the alternative: Bus Rapid Transit.

Phoenix is a haven for Chicago transplants, some even referring to it as the New Chicago, and those transplanting are sick of taxes and liberalism.

It's the socialist-leaning, Bernie Sanders loving, Millennial generation that will eventually turn any state Blue, not transplants.

Downstaters have been flocking south for decades now. That has been pretty consistent. I doubt those people are the ones boosting the numbers enough for a news outlet to make an article about it.

Not really surprising given the sorry state of affairs under Cuomo and DeBlasio. Unfortunately, many of these escapees will mindlessly continue to vote Democrat in the successful red states they flee to.

There should be a new law. If you voted Democrat while living in a blue state and then decide to flee what you voted for, then you can't vote in your new state for ten years.
Born, raised and live in New York; population declines (especially upstate) has been going on for a few decades and is due to a host of reasons.

It varies by region, but economy usually comes first. Upstate is emptying out because much of it is part of rust belt area and suffers same issues. Decline in manufacturing since 1960's coupled with local or state failure to create new jobs that offer same compensation has meant people packed up and moved.

Next comes simple fact boomers and their parents generation are either retiring or dying off. Many who retire chose to live anywhere else but NYS or NYC for a variety of reasons, top of that list is taxes.

NYS like many other areas in north east were long propped up by massive immigration from first Europe, then other areas like Mexico (legal or illegal), which helped mask other population declines (deaths, people moving...). Over years thanks to various policies illegal immigration is slowing, or those undocumented are going elsewhere in USA.

New York City is always an odd case because population is highly transient. People come here from all over country or world, remain for a few years the go back to wherever they came from.

Right now plenty of transplants who once were flocking to NYC are getting the eff out. The young ones living two, three or more to an apartment lost their jobs and cannot afford rent. Others still working but scared to death of catching covid-19 ran back to Podunk, USA.

OTOH those who earn and were even remotely considering buying a house or otherwise getting out of NYC some day saw covid-19 as their exit.

There are other reasons but won't go on.. Suffice to say downstate will bounce back, it always does. OTOH upstate will continue to shed population until they can find some way to bring back good jobs up there. That and find people willing to put up with often long and very cold winters.

That's how the democratic socialists won that seat. It takes a good ground game. They didn't even have any real money or endorsements.
There is always better.

The real learn was how it CAN be done without money or influence. That lesson is for anyone of any political leaning.

It should be up to each individual state whether to allow Democrat refugees the right to vote ... states rights and all.

Alabama and West Virginia are also losing seats due to population loss. Same with Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Mississippi and Louisiana might lose seats.

Oregon and Colorado are slated to gain seats.

Individual state have challenged the national voting rights act and have lost. So no, that was already the plan for states attempting to limit voting to only the populations who they wanted to give voter access. Maybe try again with this new Supreme Court makeup.

I saw the SCOTUS used that line that no one had status to bring case as the census was not official yet.

So expect suits from all the states loosing population claiming that many were missed.

Also due to covid-19 many were simply not in their homes and will return when it is safe.

I expect an attempt to redo the census after the vaccine is injected in 70% of a given population.
