But in this era of increasing diversity and the breaking of long-rigid political-demographic barriers, there is no self-identifying atheist in national politics. Indeed, throughout history, only one self-identified atheist in the U.S. Congress comes to mind, the late California Democrat Peter Stark.
Part of it is history. 100 years ago, the Communists in Russia declared themselves officially atheistic, and started persecuting religious people and violating human rights in general. That really hurt the image of atheists in the US, with its First Amendment. Also, even outside of human rights / totalitarianism issues, people irrationally link atheism with immorality.
A homosexual will be president before an atheist. Same with lower level offices. It is in the inherent nature of humans to believe in (and worship) a higher power than themselves, and that requires humbleness, which an atheist has not. Even people who succumb to immoral and unnatural human pleasures agree on this.

Being religious or atheist has nothing to do with humbleness.
There have probably been a lot of atheists who kept their beliefs in the closet.
I agree. I also noticed that the few Indian Americans who succeeded in the Republican Party had to convert to Christianity in order to win. I wonder if they deep down inside believe in Christianity or are just agnostic like myself (rather than actively practicing Hindus) just to be viable candidates. I think there are several closet atheists and agnostics in both parties sitting in the White House.
Of all things bad Trump was, the only positive was that he was an atheist. And conned the fundies, who for the life
of me I can't understand their support to him.

Regardless what his heart was on the inside, he pushed values that conservatives and evangelicals believed in. Why is this so hard for leftists to understand? Not a single individual on your side of the aisle would have done what Trump tried to do to further conservative values. Do you really not get this simple concept?

Oh, I get it. He found a parade and jumped ahead of it. What I don't get is why so many fundies continue to accept being conned by him.
