"My body, my choice" might be a good response here.
Politicians say Covid lockdowns are worthwhile even though they hurt the economy and lead to a rise in other deaths like stress and suicide. They point to the 1.8 million Covid deaths worldwide as proof.
If this is so, the WHO says that over 3.1 million Alcohol related deaths happen worldwide EVERY YEAR. 5.3% of all worldwide deaths for years and years have been directly linked to alcohol. Drunk driving, violence, organ damage, alcohol poisoning, etc. Also, alcohol has negative impacts on people's finances and relationships. Alcohol has shown to be directly connected to increases in violence.
More than 75% of the deaths are from men. Many of the victims weren't even drinking themselves.
The problem is getting worse, not better.
Why isn't there a massive global movement to curtail our rights like with Covid to stop something so much worse? In the grand scheme of things we do very little to stem the alcohol problem and it isn't working very well.
Sure prohibition led to only moderately less consumption of alcohol and the rise to violent organized crime like Capone, but California's strict lockdowns are causing damage across the board as Covid still ravages that state anyways - and the governor says it is worth it to do Covid lockdowns.
Here's an idea. You know how packs of cigarettes come with warnings? How about we put the faces of men, women and children that were killed from drinking and driving.
Try forgetting all those screams, extricating dead and nearly dead people from car crashes, family members destroyed...it can't be done. At times, I can't even tell my wife what I seen and had to do because I don't want those images in her mind.
Or how about these nice and happy commercials with people drinking alcohol. Replace them with videos of people passed out on the toilet from puking, passed out with urine and puke all around...

But out of how many people drink alcohol? 3mil is likely a very very small percentage of those that drink alcohol. And how many deaths are really attributable without a doubt to alcohol alone?
