Houston briefly surged to the highest murder rate in the country in the early 80s when Texas was about the only place in the nation growing economically. Then the oil bust hit and the crime rate fell dramatically. Phoenix immediately took up the slack and had a massive crime increase.
I also read that Odessa, TX murder rate surged very high too duringthe early 1980s.
Boom and bust cycles inherently contain periods of desperation and desperation can lead some people to commit crimes.
Boom and bust cycles can also attract certain elements, depending on what they are there for. One thing to consider is what kind of drug trade takes place and when it does.
Goodness, I wonder why Maine has such low homicides compared to Memphis, Jackson, Baltimore and St. Louis.
I wonder if there are some movements in the last year that were not popular in Maine. I wonder if the police and citizens have a much better relationship is Maine as opposed to many other cities acoss America.
That's almost as low as Japan and safer than a majority of European countries. I wonder what Maine's secret is to having such low homicide rates.
I have never been to Maine personally, but it always is rated of the safest states in America.
I just can't figure out why the homicides rates are so low in Maine?
Maine 1.3 million people and 20 homicides in 2020
Baltimore 335 homicides with less than 600,000 people
Memphis 332 homicides with 650,000 people
Jackson 129 homicides with 160,000 people
St. Louis 262 homicides with 300,000 people
Aside from your dog whistle post, it's called density and historical racism and discrimination.
More dense populations have greater demand and competition for resources (jobs and housing). Maine also wasn't part of the south that forced its recently freed slaves to live in ghettos through redlining and discriminatory practices that led to disfranchisement and a lack of resources confined to certain neighborhoods.
Stop acting like starving a people of equality and equity aren't supposed to fight for their own survival however they learned how to in a world they didn't choose and world they didn't create themselves.
America robbed these people of dignity, respect, resources, and equality and then says, "See? Look at how they act."
And it continues to feed white supremacy in those that are too lazy to understand history and how these communities have struggled for decades. And they look the other way and shake their heads as if they are any better. Dare someone to say if the roles were flipped it would be any different.
We forget about the Italian and Irish mobs in the ghettos of New York.
High rural crime rate combined with a moderate (when compared to other cities) crime rate in the city (Anchorage). Part of the issue is the large underserved community of Inuits that are isolated from society but of course lots of anti-social folks originally from the mainland there as well.
I remember watching a documentary where theirs a fairly large town (couple hundred folks) where they have to actually fly the cop into the area to do his shift. That’s a situation that’s just troublesome to say the least.
Interesting, more of the crime in the rural area. Anytime people feel "left out" there's gonna be trouble some way, some how. We have to address root causes more, but because it's more complicated and harder to solve, we look for quick fixes that don't work long term.

Maine hardly had any Blacks. It wasn't part of the North that forced recently freed slaves to live in ghettos through redlining and discriminatory practices that led to disenfranchisement and a lack of resources confined to certain neighborhoods. Maine didn't have massive bussing riots like Boston.

Thanks. Let me know when you are going to give your next college lecture. The fact is there has never been any accountability in the black community. Everything is an excuse! However thank you for your liberal dribble!
It's simple. Memphis is a crap hole. Also look at the demographics. Memphis is full of blacks. I know people will be up in arms about what I just said. However it is the truth. Blacks make up 13% of the population but make up over 50% of the homicides in this country. Maine is almost 95% white. Memphis is 65% black. Look it up if you don't believe me.
Thumbs up for having the guts to tell everyone WHY, many people know WHY but are afraid to say it.

Look, no one has a problem with quoting the statistics. What I have an issue with are individuals who only want to hear "Blacks are a violent race". Statistics aren't racist. Some of the people bringing them up often do so only for racist reasons, and with no sense of asking other questions. You're mentality is Memphis is violent because it's majority Black. DeSoto, TX as 69% Black, and it has a low violent crime rate, low murder rate too. Guess what else it is: MIDDLE CLASS!! It isn't middle class Blacks committing the murders. It's the individuals living in the ghettos and living in the worst conditions committing the most violent crime.
