In 2010, they built a $32 million water treatment plant to make sure the inmates were drinking only the best water, but it didn't work so now they are spending $46,000 per month to get those inmates nice and clean bottled water. Must be nice to go to prison in California where the lawmakers do so much to look out for you.

California's corrections department is spending $46,000 a month to buy bottled water for inmates and staff at a prison in Tracy where it opened a state-of-the-art water treatment plant eight years ago.

Deuel Vocational Institution draws water from brackish wells on its grounds and runs it through a two-step treatment process before providing it to 2,300 inmates and 1,000 employees for drinking or for showers.

Bottled water is a scam. They take water that is essentially free or they take it from public sources and then pay nothing for it, then they bottle it and its almost all profit. Even actor Will Smith got into it for easy money. If they're using tax payers money and the government is in cahoots with suppliers, you can bet there's corruption and someone is making money illegally.

People in CA are paranoid about drinking water from the tap. There are countless water districts and they are all different but all need to meet a standard to provide clean potable drinking water to the public, yet people act like water from the faucet will kill you in a matter of hours if you drink it.
I often tell people I drank water from the water hose my entire childhood when outside playing and yet here I am 50 years later still alive and relatively healthy. People here in CA look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them this.

Why can't they install water filtration system stations inside the prisons? A couple in the cafeteria, then a few scattered around the complex with compostable cups.

And if the inmates vandalize those units, then let them drink tap water instead.

They are inmates. Convicted criminals. No one is asking them to drink water that is contaminated or unsafe. They should be told, drink the tap water or go thirsty. Only in America do criminals get to dictate prison policy.

Maybe they should address the reason why they have SO MANY criminals in jail in the first place!

Its not exactly a secret that the US (CA especially) has a MUCH MUCH higher number of inmates compared to other countries. LOL

Makes more sense to target the real problem.

California doesn't want those in prison to have to drink tap water to drink. Just raise taxes to pay for it if they want better water and get them what they want.

Wonder how many of those inmates are there due to Marijuana crimes. Wasting millions of dollars in taxpayer money housing inmates due to pot. Legalizing pot will save taxpayers billions of dollars on housing inmates. Plus pot will be taxed and government will earn more money from pot tax. Legalizing pot is win-win for everyone and a huge taxpayer savings.

Quite a few are in prison for parole violations 75% are re-incarcerated within 5 years. It's stacked to keep the door revolving. Very little money and effort is used to reintegrate and reform offenders the focus is on punishment and they were angry and broken before being incarcerated and even worse after they're released to the public. Punishment isn't a deterrent I know I've worked in the system. Yes there are corporations profiting from the current set up.
