from what i can see this is an absolute loser of a case. my guess is that he's just posturing for his base and this will have the same outcome as when he sued bill maher for $10million for defamation. trump ( and then attorney micheal cohen ) made a big deal in the press when they filed the case but quietly dropped the suit a few weeks later, knowing that they didn't have a case ( maher's claims that trump was the spawn of an orangutan were obvious satire and immune from defamation lawsuits ).
CNN routinely lies on its broadcast channel under the guise of opinion but appears to be factual. Even CNN's online articles titles are misguiding and later changed for the record.

No you make a demand first so they can settle with you before you file. He will lose but it will highlight that the laws need to be changed. CNN just does what they want.
