Americans failed collectively, it doesn't have much to do with the leadership.
It's a selfish country. It's not a collectivist mindset that rises up to challange like Australia, New Zealand and a majority of Asia.
This isn't the 1930s, Americans are all about "me, me and me" and a vast majority don't care unless it impacts them directly these days.
Doesn't matter how many "stay-at-home orders" government implements, Americans are very selfish generally and are going to do what they are going to do despite the virus risks.
Definitely true, does lacking national leadership in this case a president who did everything in his power to ignore and dismiss the issue definitely exasperated the problem and contributed probably to the majority of deaths. Even if another Republican was in office they would have done more and dealt with the situation accordingly.
Just like every other issue that has faced this country over the 4 years, the people have suffered besides the rich.
There's a middle ground here - not all "awful" or "rainbows."
Yes - lots of folks hospitalized still have symptoms later on.
Now please follow up - MOST people will NOT be hospitalized.
So you have to ask yourself - have you ever been hospitalized with a serious illness? Were you on a ventilator? How long were you in there? And when you finally got out - were you 100% fine in 6 months? Regardless of illness - most folks have lingering conditions after being seriously ill. COVID is no exception. Fortunately, most COVID victims are never sick enough to visit a hospital.
YES I know it's a huge number in terms of "numbers." But it is a small fraction of all COVID positive people.
Meantime - I just really don't know what any "leadership" could have done to make a big impact. Some tiny change, sure, but whatever your idea is - please share it with Europe, Brazil, India...??
Actually a leadership change here in America will make a huge difference going from no plan to actually having a plan. going from an administration who thinks there's no problem and there's no more than 10 cases they will just all go away to an administration who knows it's a problem and needs to actually work the issue day in and day out and do their jobs.
Minimize it as much as you like as the daily deaths and cases continue to be at record levels.

the daily deaths and cases haven't been at a record for a couple of days. Or did you mean (7-day) average?
we've had national plans since March 15 by the way.
Sorry but there is no national plan in the current administration failed on rolling out proper testing and had a failed task force and is now failing with vaccinations.
It seems like it's been years but if you recall we have an administration that wanted to approach this by doing herd immunity after being persistent that there was no problem or trying to inject people with bleach and other crazy ideas so if you call that a national plan...
If only we were more like Europe who are back to normal now
Where do you get your info?
Or are you being facetious?
Europe is going on lockdowns with nothing but essential trips in some countries like Ireland and Scotland. Death rates there are much higher than here. Even countries that did well in the spring like Germany have skyrocketing death rates.
