Good article and well written. I read it with a non partisan open mind and can not refute her claims of Trump attempting a soft coup. Another example of the checks and balances laid out in the constitution work and saved us.

OK, but why doesn't someone take a look at the deeper grievances of Trump's base? The gang that took over the Capitol Building represent only the most radical element of a large group of people who have been cast aside for the last 30 or so years. Underneath all this there are some things to think about, like: structural change in the US economy and labor force, the decline of Industrial Unions, and the subprime mortgage crisis, to name a few.

Of course, they have grievances.

The developed world is moving from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. It takes fewer people to get the work done and by and large, those people need to possess at least high school level reading and computer skills.

Take manufacturing, for example. Competitive manufacturing in the the U.S. is largely automated. How many years has it been since an actual person and not a machine put a spare tire in each new car coming down the assembly line?

A few years ago, Siemans was interviewing for positions at a new manufacturing plant in NC. They needed employees who could troubleshoot and solve problems on automated equipment, employees who could use computers to resolve issues. They interviewed over 3,000 and still couldn't find the couple hundred they needed to staff the place.

Plenty of people willing and able to do repetitive tasks on an assembly line, but little need for that what with automated equipment and all.

The $80K/year union jobs are largely gone as well, and unlikely to come back what in the foreseeable future what with the decline of the industrial unions and all.

So when decent jobs all require at least high school graduate level reading and computer skills and half the nation is reading at a 6th grade level or below, a lot of people are going to get left behind.

"According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of U.S. adults 16-74 years old - about 130 million people - lack proficiency in literacy, reading below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level."

What chance do these people have of being competitive in the Information Age?

Fiona Hill is a no nonsense woman. When she says, "studying authoritarian regimes for three decades, and I know the signs of a coup when I see them."

I believe her.

"The president’s actions and his falsehoods have shattered America’s democratic norms, exacerbated its political divisions and put people’s lives at risk,"

...

"As in the case of other coup attempts, the president’s actions have put us on the brink of civil war."

If we are ever to get democratic norms restored, the Congressional Republicans need to quit lying about who won the election and tell the truth.

This is the case, and it is a sad situation.

So, how do those individuals who feel so cheated in life going to begin to better understand this and not continue improperly reacting to by lashing out or angrily targeting others due to their anger and resentment?

This is absolutely true, however, they have played into these false narratives for over 4 years and now they have a majority of their voters who believe them, and they lack the will, the courage, and the ethics to confront these Trump lies. They created this Frankenstein.

If they understand this, then what? It doesn't change their situation. Kids are being graduated from high school unprepared for the information age.

We still need laborers but we bring in immigrants for those jobs. Every society consists of a percentage of people suited to those jobs.

So there is not much to understand other than they have been screwed. And they are justified in being angry about it.

Lots of people hold responsibility for creating Frankenstein, but the media has the starring role. No other entity, group, or person holds a close second.
