Why is everyone discussing UBI like it's a real part of Yang's platform? NYC doesn't print its own money. We can't borrow extra unless Cuomo (or whoever will be the new gov) approves. The millionaires that are supposed to be taxed to raise extra money can pick up and go even further than Yang does when he doesn't like it here. Where is that money supposed to come from???
I'm also doubtful about the way it's planned. In total agreement with Dave 92 LSC about how this can be good - and should be a basic right. But IMO what we need is guaranteed housing, schooling (including college) and health care. Not just handing people money. Because what that will get us is more bored teens with fireworks and guns and fewer people actually working. Heck, I like my job, but if someone's going to hand me $2,000 for puttering around the house... ding, NYC has one essential worker less. I've had it up to here doing my paperwork past 2 AM and I want my break.
Don't worry about Yang, you need to talk to your supervisor

Really though? Or is it because that's not the topic at hand so the poster just didn't mention that? This is why our country is falling apart. Internet debate is childish and unstructured. People can say whatever they want and feel empowered, even when what they said makes little to no sense at all.
My parents are from USSR, grew up and lived there. In many ways their quality of life was a lot better than here. And like here, during the soviet times, if you knew how to get ahead you got ahead. New car, new apartment, house? No problem. Pops had it all. You just had to know how to pay people off and be a good fella. And there were a lot of those.
Education was top notch, medical care as well. Oh and only one person worked. Best of wall, friendships and relations between people was something that will never happen again, not here thats for sure.
People think communist countries were like gulags. Not true.
Capitalism cant be around for too long without socialism. Its just cant. You cant pay people $10 an hour while banking billions. Wont last long.

Millions upon millions of people died and/or lived as total paupers while you lived it up because you father knew the right people. I have in the past, and will again take up arms to ensure such a system never takes hold here.
Btw, I don't care if he was handing out a grand a month. It's not worth subjecting my children to leftist indoctrination and a lack of proper schooling. We're leaving regardless!

Rather than UBI, think offering a small basic apartment with rent pro-rated on income. Enough for anybody wanting one, not just some slum hirise building that you have to wait for years to get considered. This idea of concentrating the poor to one place simply not a good idea.
With UBI, what you will get is slum lords raising low end rent to eat it up, like some do now when elderly get a small rise in their SS checks. Capitalism is good at grasping at any unclaimed as of yet money they see, especially govt money.

So who will be the landlord that takes rent according to a percentage of income? What happens if real estate taxes skyrocket? Electric bills go through the roof?
