Its inevitable actually, as porous as our borders are, all the 'contraband' being smuggled in day after day, eventually something will pop up that will kill off many.
It seems inevitable when we are combining travel and migration with a destruction of habitat around the globe as well as pressure on various species from global climate change.
Sure tariffs in theory might get people to stop buying Chinese junk on Amazon...but I seriously doubt that. Meanwhile in trade agreements and policies that actually matter China wiped the floor with Trump.
Tariffs 50 years ago could saved American consumer goods manufacturers. Now its too little too late and just another tax on consumers. CAuse most things its either China or Mexico or some little third world country with sweat shops for clothing. No American made alternative.
Is it just me - I'm from Europe - but these two guys, Bill and Melinda Gates, seem totally unnatural in the way they speak about the possibility of a 2nd more deadly virus?? Is this the way how Americans would speak about a deadly pandemic? Are we culturally that different in manners?
Trust me, if America will perish, it will be out own doing. America was born with greed, disregard for human rights, and conquest. And the greed continues. The 1% has made sure that their wealth is secure by making the peasants go at each others' throats.
If America disintegrates, do you think the 1% will care? They have the resources to be around afterward to clean up.
It reminds me of the 2008 housing crash. Who swept in and bought up all the houses after people lost their homes?
Billionaires are hardly blamed for anything. But they are the ones with the resources to pull strings.

The OP's concern is valid. Bill and Melinda Gates said in an interview with Colbert in June that there will be a second, deadlier pandemic and it will get even bigger attention.
For Pete's sake, do some looking around at all the books that have been written about pandemics. There are people who spend their whole lives studying epidemics and pandemics.
There will always be another bigger one. It's what they do.
