An interesting opinion piece on what it means for the first woman to be Vice President

Quote:
In the weeks before the country swears in its first female vice president, I’ve been trying to write a sweeping essay about progress and trailblazers and glass-breakers and what it all means. But what I keep thinking about is this: At some point in Kamala Harris’s life, someone has instructed her to carry her keys like a weapon when she walks to her car. Someone has said, Get them out of your purse even before you leave the grocery store. Arrange them between your fingers, and if someone attacks you, aim for the face.

How do I know this? Because this is Woman 101. It’s the first page of the instruction manual teaching us how we’ll need to navigate the world. I have never met a woman who hasn’t heard this piece of advice. And I doubt that in 232 years of male leadership there’s ever been a sitting president or vice president who has.

When I was younger, I assume I would see a woman president way before now. After seeing the hatred directed at female candidates, now I'm amazed that I'll get to see a woman vice president - and questioning whether the misogyny and bigotry that runs deeper than I ever realized will allow me to see a woman hold the highest office in the land. But this is still a milestone to celebrate

And to the haters who feel like there aren't enough fake news Kamala bashing threads based on lies here, feel free to chime in - I am looking forward to expanding my ignore list so I don't have to see the hate filled posts from people who can't handle their candidate losing a free and fair democratic election.

If you are pro Kamala then list the positive things she has done in her career. All you have is she is a woman. Not a good reason to celebrate sorry.

Kamala as DA of SF Co was responsible for the highest conviction rate of black folk ever in history. Her chief of staff was a notorious womanizer that cost the Co millions in discrimination suits. He then went on to bother women under him while she was CA attorney general, and cost taxpayers millions more for his sex abuse. Kamala still claims to not know anything about it.

Yep. I saw a fallacy and sexism in it. It gave me no reason to support the VP and just more reason to oppose her.

Is it really trail blazing to be selected because of your immutable characteristics? She is the antithesis to a breaker of the glass ceiling.

By the way, I doubt there is a man that hasn't been given that fundamental basic self defence advice, given they are far more likely to be the victim of violence than a women.

But great article

So what do you think of the hatred directed at male candidates?
