Quite a few comments parrot talking heads. Post #20 is like civics 101, immeasurable knowledge for how laws are made in the USA.

Those who are embarrassed to call themselves say they are "progressives".

Completely different. Even conservatives hold classic liberal values on many issues and do not want an illiberal society. Leftists are far-left, not just democratic-socialist but full Communist and Marxist. These are people licking their chops at the prospect of condeming you and your entire family to the Gulag

Eh? My in-laws tend to lean pretty far left. None of them wants a gulag for anybody.

Then I would say to them they are misusing the word leftist

Leftists are truly vile and dangerous extreme ideologues

Perchance, have you interacted with anyone lately who’s fairly deeply left? To be sure, there’s some extremists out there who I can’t disagree are petty, misguided, and delusional. Those kind of people have always existed, in various forms and ideologies, and always will. But I can’t help but think you’re leading yourself to believe there’s a whole lot more of these people than there really are.

I don't think there are many at all but that doesn't mean anything because they are unrelenting and uncompromising and they are quickly gaining positions of power and influence in all the major institutions and they have the ability to coerce others into going along under threat of social excommunication

The standard Liberal is a dying breed in the Democratic Party. They believed in:
  • Free speech with an absolute abhorrence for censorship of all kinds.
  • In general, new ideas tend to be the best ideas.
  • Responsible environmentalism.
  • Massive distrust for massive corporations.
  • General distrust for big government.
  • Equal rights for all.
  • Everyone should have equal opportunity.

The rising generation of "Democrats" is veering Far Left and they believe:
  • Viewing the world through an oppressor vs oppressed lens, which is rooted in Marxism.
  • Historical revisionism defining who was oppressed and who was the oppressor. (Example: Islam was the oppressor for more than a millennia, but Progressives transform them into the oppressed without any explanation or justification.)
  • The rights of whoever they deem as "the oppressed" supersede the rights of those they deem to be "the oppressors."
  • Equality of outcome for all. If everyone does not have equal outcome, this is a clear sign of oppression and foul play.
  • Western Civilization is irredeemably evil.
  • The concepts of cultural appropriation, 1500 genders, body positivity, man-splaining, internalized misogyny, internalized racism, everything being racist, sexist, or some other XXXist, or XXXphobic.
  • Pretty much every really weird new concept that has come out recently.
Good post, but can anyone name a standard liberal in the Democratic Party? I can't think of one. But except for new ideas are generally the best ideas, it describe most Republicans and Trump and Trump supporters.

I agree with you there. A lot of the less good-faith actors on the left have made a pretty good power play that way.

I think there’s some room to improve about how we talk about each other, though. There’s a lot of pretty nasty and divisive talk from a lot of people of a lot of different political persuasions. I think that rather nasty tone of discourse and the seemingly unchecked generalizations are a big help in entrenching the more hardline loose cannons into positions of influence.
