My brother told me that he was spit on when he returned home.
My brother didn't tell me that much, even. But God help us all if the TV comes on and they're talking about Iraq; at that point, only my husband can talk to him.
As for the Purple Heart for PTSD, while I certainly sympathize, I think it's a little silly, just like I think those Hollywood berets all the soldiers wear (as opposed to certain forces like the Green Berets or Airborne) are silly. Look-good, feel-good warfare isn't going to change a thing. I think these brave men and women are more worried about whether they'll be taken care of when they get home than a Purple Heart. How much of our tax dollars went into this stupid idea? Do I believe that a veteran should be PAID for PTSD if it can be properly proven? Absolutely. Do I feel like s/he should get a Purple Heart? No.
I agree; I think we need to make sure these veterans are give alot more than veyterans from the vietnam war. We need to make sure they get medical and then give them real GI benefits.Things like college education and training payed beyond what anyone else gets.
Compelling reasons why the Purple Heart Medal should be awarded to those brave warriors suffering from "POST COMBAT STRESS DISORDER" ASAP are posted at Griffin's Lair, http://www.grifslair.com Visit today, thanks, Grif.
A purple heart is for those wounded in combat who were engaged in combat.
Instead of feel good medals lets be more careful how and when we go to war.
My dad was wounded by a rocket attack on his helicopter base in Cu-chi Vietnam. He didn't get a purple heart. He wasn't on a combat operation at the time. And he didn't care about a medal. All he has said to me is "yeah the bastards nabbed me,they sent me to Japan to recouperate.
Honor to your dad for his service. He should have received the Purple Heart. PM me if you wish, and I'll start the process for you.
Although I am not entirley sure if 100% PTSD should qualify for the Purple Heart. But John Fortunato gives a good perspective. I am rated at 100%.
I was wondering if Sec. Gates and Dr. Forutnato are still purposing it ?
Thank you
My Father was a veteran of WW2, Korea, and Viet-Nam. his view on PTSD qualifying for The PH would not have been favorable. I'm kinda on the fence on this one but I feel that combat effects different people in different ways. My Dad had nightmares...bad ones, and I watched a group of scungy hippies spit at him when we picked him up at the airport after his last tour in Viet-Nam. I've never forgiven the hippie subculture to this day for how our vets were treated then. Now the American people treat our returning soldiers with the respect they deserve but the government they served (still) spits on them. Maybe, instead of offering them a worthless medal, they should step up and ensure that our combat troops get the things they need to succesfully return to everyday life. Proper counseling, a gradual transition from combat to "the World" and an assurance that they have done NOTHING wrong in serving. Nevertheless, there are a lot of guys that will come home so changed that a "normal" life will not be possible. There are very few that will come home from war unchanged at all. So, even though still intact physically, they are still casualties. "A pretty ribbon ain't gonna make it better." (to quote my Father)
