Gas Tax hasn't been increased nationally since 1993.
Federal Hwy Funds are not enough to repair our highways
Those that use the highways should pay more for them
Therefore it makes sense to raise the gas tax.

Should there be a tax on EVs? They also use the highways and roads while avoiding the national and state gas taxes.

I have no issue with an increase in the federal gas tax, it's only 18.4 cents/gallon. I'm more concerned with our state gas tax, already 49.4 cents/gallon and the state house is proposing an 18 cent increase, which would make it the highest in the country. The transportation is in the red, due to lack of commuters paying tolls now that so many are working from home, plus our many bridges are falling apart. Of course, I'm working from home now too, so I can go several months on a tank of gas.

Pete narrowed the broad question down to the infrastructure that falls under the Dept of Transportation, the highway system.

He said he was open to considering increasing the federal tax on gas to help fund the highway system, given more money is being spent than is coming in.

Can you think of a better source of funding the highway system than taxing gas?

If you read the OP’s link beyond the headline, you will appreciate that Pete raised the EV issue, too.

There is no doubt that there will be adjustments to the laws as more and more EV's hit the roads. My state of Mass. already has high gas taxes and even though it was voted down twice by the People the Governor was able to slip it in the back door so we could be seeing taxes on a gallon of gas going up 30 cents in the next few years.

They once floated this idea of taxing people for the miles they drive and looked at other means of increasing revenue on people that do not drive that much.

I already pay an excise tax on the cars, the boat trailer and the boat itself! Excise is explained as a road use tax, the boat never touches the road?

Ev's could see a tax for the miles they drive so that means putting a transponder in your car so they will also know right where you are and how fast you are driving.

Something that our elected never mention is cutting waste, cutting spending but they are so keen on raising taxes all the time.

Even I didn't blame gas prices on Trump. I don't think, lol.
