My original thinking was that it was a demonstration inspired by Trump that accelerated into an assaultive riot and an insurrection. It was targeting the national capitol, the seat of government, and was a destructive and deadly attack and invasion. It turned into a coup attempt because the intent was not to air grievances or to simply demonstrate support for Trump (who stated that he would accompany them to the capitol). It was intended to cause a disruption of a constitutional process of finalizing the election and installing Trump as a false pretender to the presidency. The intent and the means to carry it out were present. Weapons and zip-cuff ties were brought into the capitol and they gained access to the legislative chambers and offices and restricted areas. The fact that they were not successful carries no weight. The fact that they could not be successful and some were misguided and had no understanding of the constitutional process carries no weight.
Some, now, are saying they were simply caught up in the heat of the moment. That is the excuse one would try to use at a lynching. A lynching is what this could have easily turned into. Indeed, they brought a gallows to the capitol to convey the idea of what they were about.
It is alleged, and widely reported, that certain members of congress brought the leaders of the coup into the capitol for a tour the day before the attack. That should be thoroughly investigated. Senators Cruz and Hawley certainly had the intent to delay the proceedings even though the constitutional outcome was not in doubt. Their role should be examined as well. There was coordination and advance planning involved. There was monetary support and participation of like-minded groups. This was not a spontaneous event that got out of hand.
Because there wasn't a coup. You libs need to visit countries like Venezuala, Cuba and African countries where a real coup happened. HINT: the military is always involved, not a bunch of rednecks doing stupid things.
