They are human, and as such they are offered freewill by their creator. But, the powers that be disagree and want to play God with them.
Considering the conditions they're in within the camp, don't think of yourself as somehow humanitarian because you'd refuse their wishes to go on a hunger strike.

They do the same thing with people sentenced to death. They try to hang themselves in their cells, and they'll cut them down and try to revive them. They can't be "ill" when they administer the execution either, they must be perfectly healthy. I agree that makes no sense.
