A lot of people have lost jobs, or had their hours cut, related directly to the pandemic. They still have to pay rent/mortgage, pay the electric bill, take their kids to the doctor, buy groceries.

Unemployment has decreased, but it's still double what it was a year ago.

So yes, there are people who "need" $2,000. I would think that's kinda obvious.

The Senate adopted a budget resolution for coronavirus relief (keyword is relief):

The bill would be more targeted, lowering the threshold for the payments to begin phasing out above $50,000.

$50,000 is the median income level in America.

I think the stimulus should be targeted, in part, by comparing an American's 2020 earnings to their 2019 earnings. If their 2020 income is 100% or more than their 2019 income - and they are still employed currently - no stimulus checks.

From there, a sliding scale for "full stimulus" to "partial stimulus" to "no stimulus." We could lower the price tag while getting more help to those that need it.

If veterans happen to fall in the "lost income" category, they get stimulus. If they were not effected financially, then they do not. Same with seniors. I'd imagine that seniors that are on pensions and drawing on retirements funds were less effected by job losses due to COVID than those that were relying on a paycheck.

Of course, if someone wants to educate me on why we should give extra stimulus to veterans and seniors regardless of how their finances changed due to COVID, I'm all ears. Maybe I missed something.

I just don't see the point in giving stimulus checks to those that have retained their job and their income level.

In case it matters, I generally vote Democrat. That's just my feeling on stimulus.
The problem is that most 2020 taxes are not submitted until April 15th, and they would have to require proof of layoffs or cut in hours. For all 157 million U.S. workers to submit the information and have it reviewed before issuing checks would be an administrative nightmare, and probably cost more in staff time than just giving the money to everyone based on the 2019 tax returns.

The whole idea of stimulus is exactly that...stimulus...which means supporting a variety of businesses by spending. It does not mean putting the money in the bank or investments.

Give the money who need it most and will spend every last dime on mostly local businesses.

Perhaps the ideal situation would be to issue only stimulus credit cards that cannot be redeemed for cash and used for purchases only. That way every taxpayer could get a stimulus CC with the only option of making purchases thus supporting businesses.

It really should be called "aid" and not "stimulus", and then be targeted ONLY to those who lost their jobs.

Why should seniors get stimulus money? Especially ones with lower incomes and large stock portfolios?

This is much more realistic, but the median household income is only around $70K. That should also be the phaseout amount.

Imagine how much more money US citizens could have had if the relief bill wasn't loaded up with pet pork projects that send billions of dollars overseas.

I voted for only those who have suffered due to COVID alone and who remain unemployed (meaning they are either now collecting unemployment benefits or whose unemployment benefits expired in February 2020 or later) or who have had their hours cut. Everything else, imo, is what used to be called "welfare", and also imo, taxpayers pay for too much "welfare" as it is.

Example, my daughter and her husband make over 200K a year with 2 kids. I’m not sure what their adjusted gross income is. They have built a house for over 500K which helped the economy and employed some folks. They are paying their mortgage, taxes and utilities on time which supports a lot who won’t or can’t. They send their kids to private school because the liberals have destroyed the school system. They had to choose a more expensive neighborhood and house than they really wanted because liberals have undermined law enforcement and many neighborhoods are turning into war zones and anarchy. They are doing all that and keeping a positive attitude and still voting Democrat amazingly enough.

If they don’t deserve some government help I don’t know who does.

No federal stimulus.

But I support stimulus paid by the states that could "afford" to shut their economies down.
