Countries do not have friends, they have interests. Sometimes, those interests can be furthered via mutually beneficial arrangements. A problem with people of Trump's mold is that they do not really operate with the concept of "mutual benefit". They see the world in terms of giving it or getting it, no gray areas, and if a deal leaves both parties happy, it's because you one of the parties was a weakling who didn't press his/her advantage.
