I've been saying for years that it will take decades for our former allies to trust us again. Why should they? They have no assurance that we won't break any treaty in 4 years or less.

Ukraine's president, you remember - the one who Trump tried to bribe, said today that the US is not a good example for democracy anymore after Trump's attempted coup. I have to agree. Trump all but destroyed our democracy and it will remain threatened as long as he and his supporters continue to get away with their treason.

Nobody said anything about altruism. Trump made us weaker. So former allies are showing their hands as fair weather friends. The take away is, stop electing fools into office that will make us weak, internally and externally.
Countries do not have friends, they have interests. Sometimes, those interests can be furthered via mutually beneficial arrangements. A problem with people of Trump's mold is that they do not really operate with the concept of "mutual benefit". They see the world in terms of giving it or getting it, no gray areas, and if a deal leaves both parties happy, it's because you one of the parties was a weakling who didn't press his/her advantage.
