Isn't that what happened, or attempted, at our Capitol on Jan. 6th?

Lack of jurisdiction because he was no longer in office.

You’re the one who brought up Belknap as a precedent, I figured you’d already done the research.
Here’s one link:

Although Belknap’s spring 1876 impeachment trial did not lead to conviction, 22 of the 25 Senators who voted for acquittal did so primarily because they felt the Senate had no jurisdiction over a resigned cabinet member.
As a side note, Belknap actually was guilty of what he was accused of. The evidence against him was pretty damning. The “evidence” against Trump is underwhelming in comparison, to put it politely.

Thanks for the link. Belknap is only one of the three who faced impeachment after they were no longer in office.

I find this interesting in the link you provided:

The House of Representatives impeached Grant’s secretary of war that same day, but the Belknap scandal was not about to fade away. The Senate voted to try him despite his resignation, and no less a Western figure than Custer testified against him.

Yep. Like I said, Belknap was beyond a doubt guilty. In a civil trial he almost certainly would have been convicted. I don’t see a conviction of Trump as any more likely in the Senate, which is one reason I’m opposed to the waste of time.

We need to be united in ensuring the constitution is upheld by elected officials while in office.

First there is nothing I see that Trump urged insurrection.

Secondly, those that seek to usurp the Constitution have no desire to uphold it.

Didn't see them protesting when States were violating it in our last Election either.

So you are naught but fishing. The actions of the Democrats and their allies are a black stain on the history of the USA and of freedom itself. A dark, black festering malignant stain.
