We are probably not going to get epistemic closure on an emerging pathogen. Everything is not known about it . As things become known it changes what we have known. Washing hands is a good start because what is known about this virus is what it shares with similar viruses and soap and water is a good first defense. When Russia got bogged down in a war in the middle east and the US came in the first thing the Russians learned about the American soldiers was how much washing took place and how they were not sick all the time.
The only thing I learned from the Adam and Eve story is that we should risk everything for knowledge even life itself. Covid has shown us people who wont risk a dollar or their comfort level to see if something will work.
My point is that people with NO understanding of science and that have absolutely no clue what the scientific method even is, are the first to grasp at a statement, find one little scientific shred, often taken out of context and declaring their position true. And then personally attacking anyone that dares question their hypothesis (a word they typically have no idea what means) and screaming if they are asked to produce data or define a reproducible experiment. And then screaming "the science is settled"-as if their opinion makes it so.
It's called Dunning-Kruger. And being a cognitive-dissonance, confirmation bias having hack. It is the human condition for 99% of people in this world. You're outnumbered, and this is a democracy.

Was reading a quote by doctor that spend his entire life being attacked for his theory by other scientists but his theory was right and turned out to be true and accepted after generations of fighting. In his Nobel speech he noted that no one ever changes minds, the opposition simply dies off.
Many of the greatest advances in science were not discovered by doctors or medical staff. Some of the greatest advancements were discovered by entomologists, chemists, or just lay people who's ideas were stolen by scientists.
Blind adherence to science gods is a sure way to head into the dark ages.
Always question. Your mind is just as good (and in some cases better) than someone trained in a certain profession.
You don't understand what science is. No matter how logical and unbiased a person is, simply looking at the evidence will not give a simple answer. Maybe that's what they teach in public school, but the reality is much more complicated and difficult.
And electric light, air travel, computers, etc., were given to us by technology, which is not really the same thing as science. The Wright brothers, and Edison, were engineers and inventors, not scientists.
And medical science has not stopped many diseases. Diseases that can be cured with antibiotics or surgery have been stopped, but most diseases are still not curable. Life expectancy increased mostly because of antibiotics, and better sanitation and nutrition. And mostly because babies and children seldom die now, which greatly increased the average life span.
Many people are confused by the same things you are confused by. They think "Science" gave us all those things, and therefore we should believe whatever scientific or medical authorities tell us.
I do not know what the idea is behind this thread. Is the idea to proclaim that science can be dismissed because scientific findings are sometimes wrong? Maybe the idea is to state that mask-wearing has not been 100% conclusive shown to slow the pandemic (although it has), and science can be wrong anyhow, therefore mask use should be optional? I am sort of stuck on that poster presented in 5th or 6th post in this thread. It mocked early and erroneous scientific beliefs as though those missteps were grounds for dismissing science. Some ignorant soul gave it a thumbs up in a subsequent post.
I look at your third paragraph. What's the idea there? What's the ultimate goal your going for? You need to reread your 3rd paragraph. All of those human advancements are due to science, all of them. People you spoke to yesterday would have been dead had it not been for science. You state that most diseases have not been cured as though untreatable diseases means that science should be removed from our lives. So, what's the idea behind this thread?
And that right there is why "scientists" are dropping the ball. Contrary information is labeled and ignored immediately, without even reading or considering it or without complete facts.
Some hand sanitizers theoretically "should" inactivate or possibly kill corona, many do not. (Only alcohol based sanitizers with more than 60% alcohol content theoretically help. Although some scientists soy it must be 70% or 80%. No one really knows because it is only theoretical anyway - not proven. But in today's "science" theory is proof. However what I said was we are told to use hand sanitizers that do not work. And this is true. It is also true that other "antibiotic" hand or surface cleaners do not kill viruses. They kill bacteria, but we are told to use them to prevent corona anyway.
Just keep ignoring the obvious facts and evidence that are right in your face. As long as you do nto read them, they cannot be true and you cannot be wrong.
So what did I miss? Who is this doing the telling? I do not recall being told to use antibacterial products for sanitizing. The stuff we use for cleaning at work is a specifically manufactured antiviral product, as is the hand sanitizer we keep on hand. Is this 'we are told' a case of misinformation being spread by various sources? Nah, I'm sure that never happens, just as I'm sure there aren't any people happy to run with the misinformation as proof that other people are idiots.
"science' has been politicized and no longer carries the weight it might have in days gone by when the latest iteration of the food pyramid was presented by the government.
Science requires challenge to exist. Questions and challenge form the oxygen science needs to breath in order to exist.
The government version of science requires silence for it to exist.

Research is a step by step process which may invalidate previous beliefs. Media calls this early data 'LIES" in retrospect. Science calls it research.
There is a reason most scientists are not spokespersons for any organization or company. Being a 'scientist' does not qualify someone as a communicator or public relations person distinct and different skill set. .
Fauci is a perfect example of a scientist who should sit behind a desk in a university or stay at the lab bench.
His handling of hydroxy was misleading and as such, sparked division and promoted ignorance. Fauci failed to mention off label use of a drug. Instead the public thought hydroxy was the stuff of a travelling medicine man.
Consider universities live off government grants and carry the government's water if they want to financially exist.

consider a virus is 10 to 100 times smaller than a bacteria which requires a microscope to see. Consider the cloth count of a typical mask used by the public. surgeons are using masks for short periods in sterile conditions to prevent bacterial infection.
Masks are the amulet tribesmen wear to ward off evil spirits.
Sure wear a mask but don't expect the absolute protection that might be afforded by a condom or oral contraceptive.
