He does not get to walk this off. Sasse voted to acquit Trump in the first impeachment. Changing is tune now will not change how he will be defined in history. Had Trump been removed back in early 2020 we would have never had to deal with the current issues right now. Sasse is responsible for it too.

A "principled conservative Republican" would have the balls to stand up for his party against the Scorched Earth recrimination campaign the Democrats are currently engaged in rather than giving them exactly what they want.
