To decide who your electoral college person votes for. Otherwise, small states might end up having zero say in anything.
Our system is brilliant in that it allows for multiple belief systems to govern themselves as they see fit while remaining under a larger umbrella that should in theory ensure personal liberties and freedoms.
The more top-heavy and centralized the government is, the less we see of that and the more divided we become.
For my own voting record, I've gone with the flow about 50% of the time having sat out the 2016 contest.

Especially considering that the D's don't even use popular vote in their own nomination process.
