Congress will soon be taking up the issue of Puerto Rico statehood. I agree with the governor:

“"...Statehood is not a panacea. Of course, we have to do better. But there’s no question that having two senators and four representatives in Congress batting for us when needed would make a difference,” the island’s governor told the outlet...."

I think it's good because it will help root out corruption, and the FBI and other federal agencies can actually get there and root out the criminal element both minor/small time and major/in government. Don't know how U.S Citizens can live not in abject poverty but in a poor enough situation like that. Also the U.S if smart can truly exploit the lower cost of living to maybe bring Manufacturing home and rejuvenate the island.

Again? I think they have rejected Statehood five times in the past. So what is the plan? Beat them down till they say yes?

Personally I think they want the perks without the commitment.

No the people have voted yes. The Congress has said no. Get the facts straight. Congress doesn’t always do what the people want.

A vote in 1967 rejected statehood. The next three referendums produced no clear majorities. The non-binding 2017 referendum was in favor of statehood, but had only a 23% turnout.

There are your facts.

Puerto Ricans voted for statehood in referenda in 2020, 2017 and 2012. They aren't the ones who have being saying no to it.

I say shed them altogether and let them be an independent country. We don't need them.
