Personally, how much money I make is between me, my employer and the IRS. For a public official, If they've not been investigated for fraud or non-payment of taxes, then no, any tax documents could remain private. Frankly speaking, it comes down to envy. Everybody wants to be a millionaire, but most people aren't smart enough.
How many Presidents since Nixon started the whole releasing your tax returns "tradition" were millionaires coming in to office?
I think the whole thing is outrageous. It's just another way to get Trump out and keep him from ever running again. This country is done with these types of tactics.
Not true. If he's violated New York State tax laws or implemented policy decisions that benefited him and the Trump Organization at the expense of the country, I, as a tax-paying citizen, care deeply about that and want him held accountable. I want him to pay up. He allegedly broke the law. And I don't think he'll be in any physical condition in four years to run again for office, so that's the furthest thing from my mind.
The Federal government could leverage the equal-time rule and FCC fairness doctrine to require candidates to share their tax returns if their opponent does the same. It would require a legislative act, of course, but it would help level the playing field. A candidate who declines to share their tax return (but their opponent does so), would not be granted equal air time.
I think the objective is to prosecute him for financial fraud and to see if he is guilty. This was started before he became president and was put on hold. No reason to not continue the investigation at this time. You are aware he has been investigated, and found guilty by this very office in the past. He is a frequent flyer in the ny AG office. It would be outrageous if he were not investigated.

Trumps tax returns are at the behest of a Court Subpoena for an investigation that has been ongoing for some time about his business dealings, they are not for public display.
To the posted question from the OP he should have made them public but I realize that it is not a requirement and I don't hold that against him. Make a law for future elections if its wanted but for someone coming from a private background it could expose private business practices that do not need disclosure.
Maybe a summary from the IRS identifying what was paid would suffice and while their out it have Bethesda Medical do a physical on candidates before the election and report if the person is Fit or Unfit to serve in that elected role, no different that people choosing to serve in the military.

The DA in NYC is seeking Trump's tax records as evidence in a criminal investigation. Not to be released as public information. That's a separate question - and, yes I think voters should have insight into a candidate's tax records. Trump is not a candidate at the moment.
YES - politicians should be held to a high standard of transparency.
