This is idiotic. Mental health and domestic abuse calls are far and away the most dangerous calls to respond to. How long until a social worker is killed? My aunt is a mental health professional and she has to call the police multiple times a day to deal with mental health crisis situations.

Well there will be mental health counselors that will be getting injured. I know may times I had responded to EDP's and everything is fine until it's not. All good. Reap what you sow. Liberalism is truly a disease.
Weve done that in a city South of here years ago. Its worked exceptionally well, and been very cost effective. The social workers arent going into tense situations, the cops still are. But they are responding with them for some calls, and handling situations that dont require a police officer.
If you mess with them though, the cops are going to be there. Its proven to be very cost effective, and led to a lot of goodwill in the city where its done.

Mental health calls are extremely volatile, how would you even know if it’s a tense situation? For example, if an adult schizophrenic son is threatening to kill his mother does a social worker show up to that situation? If so are they expected to intervene if he acts on his impulses? If the mother was to call a mental health worker they would likely have her call the police. What city are you speaking of?

So true,,there were a couple of times I went to run of the mill EDP's and almost got stabbed. It can happen in an instant.

Cops will show up for that one, they will show up once the cops say its safe. They've gotten a pretty solid policy. Its not perfect, and everyone going into it knows that. But they've really made a difference, and its worked.
No one is being dumb and hearing that 2 people are screaming at each other, and sending in the therapists. But here are some examples:
Grandma isn't answering her phone, can you do a mental health check?
Or Caller doesn't know what city they're in, and cant find where they live.
Here is a recent article describing them, and what they do. More importantly? The police department estimates that they saved over 12 million last year because of this program. Their Budget was only 51.3 million.
The only people that should be concerned are the voters there, it is what they want, so everyone else should mind their own business.
Oh I disagree! We should watch and see if it works, and talk about it. If it fails we should not do it. If it works we should. And if different places have different results we should find out why.

Until US cops stop treating mental health episodes as capital crimes, they should not be responding to mental health checks.
It's so dumb that we send the people who's directive for shooting is "failure to comply" to deal with people whose conditions are defined as "failure to comply"

Riiiigh....Liberalism is the problem.
It's not like any other country has people dealing with MH episodes, so it's perfectly justified that our cops resolve them by murdering people who are not in a state of mind to comply.
When those Liberal sissies in Europe finally start dealing with people off their meds, can't wait to see how they resolve the issue without killing the mental patient.
