If the feds mandate $15/hour minimum wage, will it make more sense to drop out of college and consider a career in fast food or retail? Because college grads and those with degrees will end up making minimum wage and get the same pay as fast food workers or retail workers.

I tend to agree that a $15 federal minimum wage will be harmful, but I don't think your assertion is correct. Yes, SOME people out of college are earning $15/hour. My first job out of college was $18K/year in the early 90s which is approximately $8.65/hour. But college graduates will likely face fewer ceilings with respect to promotions and later opportunities, at least in most office environments. Also, most people going to college don't think they will be the ones who are only able to land a relatively low-paying job. Even without the minimum wage increse, I don;t think people would go to college if they planned on making only $15/hour afterwards.

  • Beginning teacher salary in the state of a Mississippi, which requires a four year degree, for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year: $35,890.
  • Average 2020 salary of police officers in Mississippi: $33,350. (Highest paying region: Hattiesburg at $35,590)
  • Yearly pay to sweep floor at Wendy’s and take out trash, which requires zero education or skills, with new $15 minimum wage: $31,200.
Maybe it’s just me, but somehow a trained midlevel cop making just $1,150 more a year than a beginning unskilled fast food worker seems wrong on many levels.

No...it would make sense to ask for a raise.

Those with college degrees only making $15/hr obviously chose the wrong degree, and/or are satisfied with making such a small amount of money.

Most fast food joints don't hire full-time workers. Usually 20 hr week with zero benefits- no sick time, no health insurance, no vacation time, erratic schedule. The $31,200 year assumption is not typical.

Mississippi is not the example that should be used in to define compensation around the country. It ends up at the bottom of the list in pretty much every metric. I agree, it is better to work in Wendy’s than be a teacher in Mississippi.

First off, there are already fast food workers and retail workers making more than 15 dollars an hour.

I think you failed to understand the system you are addressing.

It doesn't work that way. Raising the minimum wage leads to corresponding increases in other wages and salaries, typically in excess of the percentage increase in minimum wage. A rising tide lifts all boats, as they say.
