Vernon Jordan, one of the most influential, but least remarked of the leaders in the awakening civil rights movement of the 1950's, has passed quietly from the scene at the age of 85.
A little tale I heard some years ago about the late Vernon Jordan:
There is a story that has been told for many years of a time when one of Jordan's circle asked him to officiate at the funeral of his never-do-well son; Jordan accepted, and delivered this "eulogy":
"Friends and neighbors, we are gathered here to bury {----] [------], whom everyone said would come to a bad end; last Saturday night, in the city of Birmingham, somebody proved we were right,
Like a dog he lived; like a dog he died. -- Undertaker, do your duty!"
