Saw on television a picture of a Tweet by Jill Biden, where she's sitting at Biden's desk on AF-1 going through a thick binder. She says she is "Prepping for the G7".
The Tweet has a blue checkmark, with her name, and underneath the name it says "United States government official".
Is Jill a government official or employee? Certainly not to my knowledge.
She has to do everything for Joe because of his obvious mental decline. He can't be trusted to fix his own bath water at night, so obviously, he's in no shape to manage the nation or fulfill the expectations of the highest office in the nation. This is not the first time a first lady has essentially been running the nation. This is probably why the media puts so much emphasis on the doctor part of her title. Basically saying to America that she is smart enough to run our lives.
Edith Wilson (née Bolling, formerly Edith Bolling Galt; October 15, 1872 – December 28, 1961) was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson and served as the First Lady of the United States from 1915 to 1921. She married the widower Wilson in December 1915, during his first term as president. Edith Wilson played an influential role in President Wilson's administration following the severe stroke he suffered in October 1919. For the remainder of her husband's presidency, she managed the office of the president, a role she later described as a "stewardship," and determined which communications and matters of state were important enough to bring to the attention of the bedridden president.
Phyllis Lee Levin concluded that the effectiveness of Woodrow Wilson's policies were unnecessarily hampered by his wife, "a woman of narrow views and formidable determination". Judith Weaver opined that Edith Wilson underestimated her own role in Wilson's presidency. While she may not have made critical decisions, she did influence both domestic and international policy given her role as presidential gatekeeper. Dr. Howard Markel, a medical historian, has taken issue with Edith Wilson's claim of a benign "stewardship". Markel has opined that Edith Wilson "was, essentially, the nation's chief executive until her husband's second term concluded in March of 1921".
Wilson's wife essentially took over much of his presidency when he suffered from declining mental conditions due to a stroke.
With that as a precedent, is there any reason Jill Biden should not take over much of her own husband's presidency now?
First Ladies have often been involved in the president's affairs. Its not new. Nellie Taft helped her husband in many ways. Perhaps the most notable is during his preparation on the Payne–Aldrich Tariff Act of 1909. By numerous accounts, she was with him into the late hours of the night going over each and everyone of the tariffs - about 2,000 - which would be affected by the act.
Its little wonder she was involved. He always loved the law, and got his wish after his presidency when he became Chief Justice. She wanted him to be president, a job he wasn't too fond of. She broke the mold as far as First Ladies went. Involved in her husband's affairs as president, she also enjoyed riding in cars, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and playing poker.
The spouse of the POTUS is provided office space and a staff.
But she gets no salary.
What would you call that?
The fact is women have more interest these days than Christmas decorations and recipes. They probably always did have, but were told to keep their heads covered and their mouths shut.
