Why do you think these guns were altered to appear to be Nerf brand toys?

Because an idiot thought they were being cute/funny.
Yes, there are dumb people who do irresponsible things. This does not represent the majority. Many firearm owners hate people like this because it reflects poorly on us and likely to lead to new laws/restrictions.
Personally, I would probably only go for something gaudy like gold if I were to alter the color of a gun. I’ve never particularly liked a lot of the other looks I’ve seen on guns.
I'm not advocating for the government telling us what color a gun can be. I have guns that are black, silver, grey, tan, green, camo. Not any colorful like blue or red, not really my thing but I certainly don't have any issues with that.
What I am advocating for is gun owners to realize there can be consequences to doing certain things, even if it's legal. Deliberately making a real firearm look like a Nerf toy is irresponsible IMHO. I don't think it should be illegal, but I also don't think it's smart to do. Next thing you know some politician sees this story and starts pushing for legislation to mandate what color a gun can be.
I'm not sure that what they didn't isn't illegal. It seems that the "Nerf" mount is designed to show an orange barrel, the universal sign of a toy gun. By my non-lawyer understanding, that might push it into the NFA's definition of an "Any Other Weapon" which are regulated like fully automatic firearms, short barrel rifles, sawed off shotguns, etc. While I'm an extremely strict supporter of the 2nd amendment to the point where I'd like to see guns unable to be prohibited ANYWHERE except by inmates in prisons, I can certainly support a law that makes it illegal to disguise a gun as harmless as seems to be the case here. Now I don't mean a hidden gun, I mean one that is disguised to look like a non-shooting toy gun.
So? what .0001% scenario would you like us to worry about next?
are you familiar with the term "slippery slope?"
