I think just give the Cherokee their land back for parts where it was more or less illegally taken, and then in exchange let the Jeep keep the Cherokee name. This seems like the probably most optimal deal for everyone.
Just wait animal right groups will want Ford and Stellantis to stop useing the Mustang, and Bronco, and Ram names because it promotes Cruelty to animals.
Using an animal name for a vehicle does not in any way promote cruelty to said animal. This is a false equivalency that strikes me as belittling to native American objections about using their name.
Now if it's just a "woke" white person complaining, we can ignore that!
Jeep should try renaming the vehicle "Jeep Irishman" and see how that goes.

Well the way this world is now and changing culture who knows nowadays.all i know it’s BS to many snowflakes trying to change the world.
Car/Truck naming has always been a bit puzzling. For example, Tahoe seems a great name for a large SUV with 4WD, but if naming after a city, why on earth would Toyota use Tacoma? I have always been partial to names that evoke speed & performance, such as Challenger, Charger, Sprint, Wildcat, Impala, Stealth, Viper, Diablo, Marauder, or Prowler. Many of the utilitarian "appliance" cars have appropriate names too, such as Civic, Leaf, Monarch, Accent, Fit, Focus, Vega, Cavalier, Fiesta, Escort, Gremlin. Then there are the really boring numbered names, typical of BMW and Lexus, and the lettered cars like used by Mercedes. I don't know why Jeep chose to use the name Cherokee in 1974, but they surely had no idea that 50 years later there would be a political correctness movement to change it.
Well, it's a car topic. May be it should go in Great Debates or something. But seriously, do they have a point? Think of something that is near and dear to your heart and somebody names a TV after it. Aside from that, I wonder if Cherokee has some legal protection. Does anybody own the name?

I am sure you've heard the controversy over Jeep Cherokee name, of the kind that surrounded the Redskins and anything with Indian or Chief in the name. If current norms are to be accepted, it's only a matter of time.

It's not current norms. They have been fighting to change the name of the "Redskins" team for decades.
It's not BS. People have every right to be offended by offensive names or statements made about their ethnicity.
The car will still be the same car with a different name.

Keep believing that, oh and it's an SUV.
The sad part is, you're probably right..
